What does subscribing to a Wordpress blog actually do?

On one of my Wordpress blogs I allow anyone to register as a subscriber.
I've never really thought anything of it until checking this evening and seing I have 70+ subscribers.

What does this actually do though and why do people subscibe?

Do they get a notification whenever I add new posts or when comments are made, if not, just what is the point of registering as a subscriber ?

They will get an email when you post to the relevant section/cat they have subscribed to...

A subscriber is a basic user account, which allows them to edit a profile but also comment on any open posts.

The next step up is the editor which allows them to add posts to the site.

The subscriber account is the default account in WP, but you can stop people registering by turning it off in general settings.

Your subscribers your website users that want to be know about your new posts and comments .
You can give some of them role of editor , and they can add some posts to your blog , then you will approval the posts and your content will grow up.
