Okay, I know your gonna say, ask them, but it feels inappropriate at this point.

When you are hired for a job, and they say, we need references. What do they mean?

References means 5 things to me:

1-) A written paper, sealed in an enveloped from your previous employer.
2-) A written paper, sealed in an enveloped from a someone at your university.
3-) The name and phone numbers of the person that can be contacted.
4-) Your University degree.
5-) A character reference from a friend.

The written ones seem to be the most fussy.

So when someone say they want references, generally speaking, what do they mean?

Depends who asks.
Generally it's asked by an employee who simply wants the name, address, tel number of past employers and they contact the ex-employer themselves.

I was once asked for a bank reference by a commercial LL, I simply had to sign a form and they sent it to my bank, the account was new and unused and this didn't seem to bother them and it was accepted. Not sure what it would have said mind

References are the name and contact details of those you would consider relevant to speak on your behalf about your capabilities.

Past employers, for example, would be relevant for jobs. Past tutors for educational things. Etc etc
