What do people do about online purchases when they do not get a receipt

We have reason to buy things on ebay and Amazon (as well as elsewhere online) and often find that sellers do not enclose a VAT receipt or receipt of any kind

I am then never sure how to proceed from here

I can start chasing the company but that can take some time to do losing the benefit of the faster and cheaper purchase

Can I claim the VAT if I know their VAT number or ??

Any comments welcomed - we cannot be the only ones having this issue

We put a message in the box asking for a VAT receipt at the time of purchase and usually get one or they say they are not VAT registered.

I did book a hotel room recently though with Expedia and they told me that because they are based overseas, they do not have to charge VAT so my hotel room was the price it was with nothing claimable which was a bit disappointing!

You should always ask for a VAT invoice. You should find this blog useful!

i feel it should be a legal requirement to provide a receipt and VAT if applicable

Chasing around for them is such a waste of time and I object to having to absorb the VAT because the supplier does not supply a receipt

It is. On Amazon, you can get all your receipts and print them out from your account history.

On Ebay, sellers are supposed to send a VAT receipt if they are VAT registered, so you should ask the seller to send you a receipt. If the seller is just someone selling his old shoes, then obviously you can't expect one!
