Well for me flexiable working hours worked a treat. When I had to be in work for 8.30 - hour lunch - not home till 7pm I started to mope. But then they switched to Flexible working and it was great. I could get in a 6am home early and build up hours to have a day off etc.

Don't know if it works for all and you would need to have rules in place so everyone didn't work their week by Thursday and all take Friday off.

Also working from home help a lot, I value my time far more then cash so pay rise didn't satisfy me for long.

Communication - let them know what's going on with the business and as previous poster says - make them feel involved in the company - part of the success.

Oh and doughnuts on a Friday never go amiss!!

Completely agree about the communication part...though not sure in the these times if doughnuts will do the trick

Recognition, even a simple "well done", or an award for good work, can mean more to many than just money. Many staff feel undervalued and disconnected.

reasonable salary.
not too high or you might attract employees who are willing to switch to any companies as long as they offer more.

company culture.
build the sense of belonging to the company

reasonable working time and vacation.
people need to rest from time to time. too much tension and pressure will make people leave and break their loyalty to the company. I mean, why they want to be loyal to a company which doesn't even care their well-beings.

bonus.
encourage employees to work harder. doesnt need to be money I think. sometimes a dinner party, a small present would work.

When I worked in a company in Japan, the boss sometimes used to take us out to hostess clubs and drop a couple of grand on vintage Dom Perignon. That was certainly an incentive to me!

A car loan with zero interest and co-payment by the company would be nice or an early retirement option say 5 years min would make me stay.
