What was the tweet?
The title of this thread.

What isn’t so wildly reported is the spyware you have to install before they let you in the country. It’s so invasive it can activated your phone remotely and edit any of your content.

Not that long ago your arrival at Doha International Airport.(a concrete shed) was met with military with machine guns. You did not have to ask where the toilet was . . . You could smell it!

Really? In all my years of travelling to Qatar on Business (first Doha Airport and then HIA) I've yet to be met by "military with machine guns" HIA was opened about 8 years ago and it's one of the better airports I've travelled to and from, but of course, everyone has different experiences ...

We’re you forced to install the tracking apps on your phone?

Good question, you are forced to install their (spyware) track and trace app but I did so on the work phone which is pretty much an empty phone without contacts, pictures, emails etc.

But you have now given them access to every conversation, meeting and phone call you have at work. They can activate the microphone and camera at any time.

Many countries are advising fans to buy a burner phone before they arrive but never use the phone.

I can be quite precise. It was 06 September 1997 flight from DXB to DOH. Day of Princess Diana's funeral.

They should cancel all sales in Qatar during the World Cup, not just in the stadiums.

Great global publicity (apart from the 300k population of Qatar), which will 'earn' them much more than profits on sales in Qatar.

The beer will have been sold to distributors. Budweiser won't be out of pocket in this.

In 2010 I was in a bonded warehouse in Joburg which were full of unsold Bud following the World Cup there. The locals just preferred the local beer (as did I), which was much cheaper

My ex-employer (large American multi-national) provided "burner" phones and laptops for any travel to China and similar places.

Blimey, that's and eye opener, I never knew that.

Makes me laugh. When I lived there, no one had heard of Qatar. Now everyone's talking about it, which is EXACTLY what they wanted.
Qatar has once again demonstrated how it can lurch from 'Reformist' to 'Dark Conservatism.'- Which of course, offers little confidence to business. This is especially so, given Qatar's poor performance when it comes to payment.

Apple with ios and Google with android been doing that for more than a decade now.

I needed to know what time Sainsbury opened on a Saturday so I Googled Sainsbury opening times yesterday to be told that they opened at 7:00am on a Saturday and then Google told me that I was there yesterday.

I was there yesterday and I did have my phone in my pocket but that's as far as it went

Yes, but it’s a lot more invasive. The Qatar apps have remote access, they can activate your camera and microphone and have permission to edit anything on your phone.

Unfortunately there is more in the background going on than you might think or believe. Rest be assured that even if you turn your phone off it still has power rails supplying mic and cam with power. None removable batteries was stage one to prevent devices from being actually " Off " Any decent security expert will advise you not to bring a mobile phone to meetings and leave it outside the room for various reasons. If you want to know more how intrusive Apple and Google are drop me a PM.

Na, IOS and Android both have these capabilities in hardware and software for years. Not sure why it is ok to trust US companies with ties to CIA that have the backdoors build in to hack your phone any time of the day but Qatar is not allowed to do it. In my books same things.

Our data is a very valuable commodity to Apple and Google and both have zero hesitation to exploit that at any cost.

Qatars Covid app is a poor men's attempt to collect data, the yanks mastered that art decades ago and put it in sleek operating systems by default.

Nothing new here

remote access, they can activate your camera and microphone and have permission to edit anything on your phone.
Does IOS and Android have those features named above already build into their core of operation. Yes they do. They just hide it deep in their TOS. Trusting blindly both they don't data mine your data and have good intentions is just stupide naïve thinking.

In regards to OP's statement. Saving us from shitty beer in a stadium seems a good idea. Who drinks Budweiser in Europe anyway,

Didn't you notice the ANPR cameras in the car park and the instore CCTV? Plus the latest toy - Snaps taken at the checkout when Loyalty Cards are swiped?

Recently, I called our ISP regarding a problem. The operator dropped-out how many devices were connected to my hub.

If they weren't all yours you need to secure your hub a bit better.

Source SITA. Almost 80% of the air transport industry is planning to implement artificial intelligence technology by 2021. It is expected that this will improve security, which could mean a more secure traveling experience for the traveller.
Travel to the US and pay attention to the dome of advanced cams and AI sitting behind it is is impressive.

US work Visas: Applicants must provide the social media accounts and usernames that they have used in the last five years. For example, they would need to provide this information for any Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts that they hold.

As a fun fact those social verifications are done via AI not humans and the less social media you have the longer it takes to get it approved. Tested that and it is astonishing how fast people with plenty of social media accounts get much faster approved than people that dont have any.

Last point would be neural engines / processors that became very popular in the last coupe years.

Fun fact they are being used by Apple, Google ( TPU ) and other fancy names to analyse your activity ( anything from wifi to apps to location , to camera mapping to mic and voice on a root level ) In the past such data ( telemetry ) had to be send continually back to the mothership servers for AI analyses and data mining. Not anymore. Now it can be done on your phone and saves resources.

Now neural engines on mobile do that already on your phone take away workload fror the mothership services and reduce significantly telemetry upload times from minutes to 12 hours.

Google's tensor is a break through in that area of offloading processing on your phone not their servers that includes Motion Mode, Face Unblur, Speech enhancement mode for videos and applying HDRnet to videos. Google Tensor allows push the limits of helpfulness in a smartphone.

= in other words we put a self learning spy on your phone that will map your environment.

Fun fact you ever notice that after a major new software update on IOS ( 14, 15, 16 etc.. ) or Android ( 10, 11 , 12 ) the battery life seems to be shit for some time until they fix it 30 - 60 days later with a new software update.

It is not a coincident as for telemetry and data analysis's they run phones a bit hotter and faster on a new OS release until after 30 days they got enough user data fed back to find acceptable values to run they spy stuff in the background without draining too much.

Just saying based on Qatar's Covid app this tech by google and Apple is generations ahead.....

Crikey, the worlds heading in a very wierd direction isn't it, technological advancement for what seems like some quite awful reasons, it's meant to be making our lives so much better.
