Website Upgrade Needed

Nice simple one. Have a current website - 3-4 static HTML pages. I want an upgrade to a fresh, modern and professional design. Nothing too difficult I just don't have the time to play myself - and to be honest I can't achieve the professional looking aspect of my own specification.

So am calling any web designers that might be on the forum to get in contact so I can get this sorted ASAP.

Many thanks
James

Hi James

We can design and build you a professional static website. The design will be bespoke and all coding is done by hand to meet web standards and help with search engine optimisation. Our website is www.cambridgewebsolutions.co.uk. We are a fairly new company so don't have a large company portfolio but I have been a designer and developer for nearly 7 years and have worked on websites for npower, Thames Water, Silverstone and designed and built more than 120 others.

Please let me know if you require more URLs for sites that I have done and I'll PM them to you.

Kind regards

Adam

If you're looking for a designer, I'm happy to recommend Kev @ MultiLayerDesign (http://multilayerdesign.com) - I've worked with him a lot in the past and he's always produced great results. :)

Few hours?! It should be few weeks :) Don`t rush. Make sure you ask for portfolio and check if there are enough works there, not just few. Dont fall for "we are professionals bla bla bla". ASK for proof.

Bang on and don't just go for the portfolio looking full, check them out.

I have seen many portfolio's that have sites included with dead links...did they do them or not...who knows ;)

Also, I would also ask

  1. What support do I get once it is finished
  2. Who adds any changes to the site
  3. Who owns the site design when signed off
  4. Can I see your contract of service please
  5. Can I read your SLA
  6. What is the payment schedule
  7. Are there any future costs?

To name but a few and always, always prepare a scope first then fire it off to companies and once you are happy, ensure they sign to confirm they are going to supply and comply with said scope...

Oh, and do NOT always go for the cheapest. I may be wrong, but this industry is not price sensitive BUT the prices quoted may expose the skill set you are employing ;)

Hi James

I would post a working link, but as a new member Im unable to do so.
Have a very quick look at DesignfishStudio.com

Been in business 10 years. We've built websites for supermarkets, the local council and goverment etc, but most of our clients are small one man bands.

Competitively priced, we offer very close working relationships with clients. The best way forwards is a proper chat on the phone.
I'll drop you a PM.

Hmmmm. Job Oasis is 100% bespoke. So was dream property.
One is soft, more rounded and feminine. The other more angular in design.
EDIT: Thanks for the compliments.

However, I do seem to remember the Dream Property client coming along second, wanting something similar (in terms of light/bright, blue) to the job oasis design.

Long story short, we dont "use" templates at all, *almost everything is bespoke.

I say almost, *because if a client does go tits up, on rare occasions with discretion, we may let a new client use an old template, if its original owner genuinely isn't in business, has ceased to trade and is no long online.

This as it happens, is the case with Dream Property, which is no longer online.

PS, my telephone is finally free if you wish to call ;)

Hello James

We offer fixed price website design packages that might be of interest you. We don't use templates in our design, we don't charge monthly fees and try to work in a flexible way to allow you to upgrade and expand your website as needed.

Agreeing with others: Have a chat with a few people and check them out, pick the person who can provide you with the service you need at the price that is most suitable, but essentially, feel you can trust them.

All the best
Phil

Agreed. Plenty of cowboys out there. Every year without fail, we pick up a few new clients whose last developer let them down.

Most recently, I picked one such client up 2 weeks ago. Happens all the time, which is a shame as they tarnish the reputation of good devs in the industry.

I once picked up a client who had tried THREE previous designers in a row, before coming to me as the fourth. All of the previous developers let him down.

I'm sure the folk here are credible and good at what they do, but I agree with Phil... ensure there is trust before embarking :)

We pick up our fair share of unhappy website owners, not had one as bad as that though. We also get a good few who are unhappy with a designer who was recommended by a friend.

Your right, cowboys tarnish the whole industry.

You know the type, obviously. I find it hardest to work with "second time website owners" as they fear everything will go wrong.

Regarding the client I mentioned above, what I found most interesting, is that whilst I found him easy to deal with, none of the previous three designers had been able to finish the project, and the client literally came to me with nothing. Dont remember who it was now, but from memory it was a fairly standard job - so yes, plenty of cowboys out there!
