    Im not sure if Im posting this in the right section but here goes.

    I must be the only business owner that does not 'look after' their own website! There Ive said it. How unprofessional am I?

    I am trying to figure out how I 'take over' my website.

    I am obviously naive and have left the online side of our business to be run by our web site designer. We have since parted company.

    Im sure with the right tools I can achieve better results from the web. So far I have set up Google Places and recently Google+. I have a facebook and twitter account. I have also set up an adwords campaign. Im sure Im missing something as we still rely heavily on local trade directories and local magazines. I have used the services of Scott Chapman from here to re-write the copy so Im really happy with that.

    I have just tried to verify our website on Webmaster Tools but was unable to be verified. So now Ive come to a halt and am struggling.

    Am I missing something? Or am I trying to do something only a professional can do? :|

    Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Well your not the only one who give their site over to another person, currently I do that for seven and a lot more who want to do what they can and just lean on me for hand holding.

    In fact one of the first places I worked the company bought a site for £150k and then spent another £100k paying the company to simply add content. It was complete madness as we employed about 20 IT staff including coders and already had a graphics department. Needless to say when the cost of the first year hit the bottom line not only did we have to step in but the whole department of project managers got the sack :)

    Now to your problem, how are you validating ?

    I would say;

    1. think local
    2. Create & use Facebook, Twitter, Google places
    3. Change the text on your site, perhaps just do one page each month either additional or just rework existing text. Try to add more text but only relivante meanngful text.
    4. perhaps reduce the size or number of image, ratio image to text is a factor.
    5. Reduce the text in you meta tags - TITLE is too long - put keywords you want to be found for at front of the title & description and then company name or site URL

    Thats five of perhaps lots of little things you could do to improve things on site. Off site ? see the link below for places where you can leave your backlink for some exposure paying spacific interest to the Bookmarking section.

    Small business owners need professionals, but just as importantly they need to know the basics themselves too.

    The amount of small business owners I have helped who don't even know who their websites are registered to let alone registered or hosted with is shocking.

    Any business owner who is even partially reliant on their website should have a basic understanding of Domain registration, hosting, web contracts, FTP and Google accounts.

    Some people will say it is over the top, but I say every business owner with a website should have total control just in case the worst was to happen.

    How many business owners would be offline for weeks if anything happened to their host or person controlling their site?

    So - it all sounds fantastic - but seriously - I dont know how to do all this. someone even pointed out a spelling mistake (my pet hate!) and I cant change it. I have no access.... if thats the right word

    Communication has broken down between us. The did some other work for us. We werent happy so didnt pay the invoice. We're at a stalemate with them. I presume them having control over our website gives some security in case we dont pay up!

    With respect, removing the spam on site might be a start as well as making it perfect in code.

    You only have 9 back links and no SEO score.

    That's a different story isn't it. The designer hasn't handed the site over to you as you haven't paid your bill, and you want to find out how to be sneaky and control the site yourself.

    Alas, I am with stretchy on this one and this post changes everything so, maybe you should start a new thread so we can 'explore' the real story here...

    The 'real' story is that our web designer also makes signs. He has made some signs for us which we were not happy with and have not paid the invoice issued to us. Even without the sign issue I dont think he has done much in the way of SEO or looking after our site to bring us more customers. Im not trying to be sneaky - Im trying to increase sales for our business - thats all
