Any web experts out there? A (hopefully) simple question?

What kind of expenditure can one expect to incur when starting a website, the site would need membership, and auction abilities as main themes.

Any rough costs to throw at me?!

Exactly as Roibot suggested...the question is too open ended... basic website with basic functionality is £500....anything more requires in depth conversation, about what the site needs to do, products, functionality etc etc which determines hosting and platform plus ongoing development requirements......this is a lonnnng piece of string.

Any more info you can provide will allow us to add more meat to the bone.

    main elements

    1. graphical design
    2. functionality
    3. content

Then is really depends on whether you want an off the peg solution (suit from Asda George, through to Next etc) or a bespoke (Savile row suit) or a completely unique (asking Giorgio Armani -is he still alive? - to create something from scratch)

However, the cost of developing a website can pale into insignificance compared to marketing costs, especially if you are in a competitive segment.
You might be able to create a passable alternative site for e-bay for significantly less than £5,000. But then unless you are prepared with a big marketing budget you will be unlikely to gain traction (ebay spend about $50 million per annum on Adwords alone)

As roibot said, it depends on your needs and also, who builds it.

If you wanted a dead simple register, list, bid type site with a really basic front end and only the absolute bare minimum features, the price is going to be wildly different to if you wanted something as feature rich as eBay.

You also have to consider quality; you do get what you pay for; a top notch company who will build a solid, secure, high quality product will be a lot more expensive than an inexperienced developer who's only just got the skill to actually make it work. In which case you could have a poor code base, bugs and security issues (depending on complexity).

The credentials of the developer will also play a big role; for example; if you go to a small company who have a modest portfolio you'll pay a lot less than if you go to a high profile company with a AAA portfolio; that's where you get into 6 digit figures.

The important thing is to know your needs, know your budget, talk to the developers in detail and make sure they can in fact deliver within the budget. Don't get drawn into big promises that deep down you know can't be delivered.

Or off shores who don't express and show that they clearly and thoroughly understand your needs (IMHO the biggest risk with off shores is language barriers and understanding).

RedEvo is spot on, I've worked on lots and lots of web development projects and the most important thing is to have a detailed spec at the start.

That way developers know exactly what they have to deliver and so should be able to give you a fixed price cost.

Whatever you do don't let developers start work on a per hour basis as thats the way projects get really expensive.

If you don't feel able or comfortable with writing a spec then get some professional advice.

I suggest that you have a clear budget to aim for. Before I started out as a web Designer I once attempted to create a auction site, got a quote of £20k! off 2 companies. That was before I gave indepth requirements.

Like most others would agree, you pay for quality. If your website looks low cost and tacky would a user want their payment details anywhere near it?

£20k will be a high end auction website.
£500+ would be a basic auction website with minimal functions.
There are many scripts out on the market that can be used at a cost of a few hundred ££, but they will need to be customized.

What stage is your start up at?

These guys are quite correct. Draw up a spec and submit to 3 companies you can locate by search terms in Google.

You made need deep pockets unless you use them as a 50% partner....
