Which is more advantageous, a website or Blog in an online business? Or both?

Why limit yourself.

Have a website offering your service/product, and then blog about news, updates etc.

As long as you are actually going to make time to blog, whether it be once a week or once a month. There's nothing worse than a sleeping blog IMO.

Both, wordpress forums are really easy to setup and can be installed to look like your main site easily.

Website in 90% of cases. Blogs have quite a high maintenace and for majority of businesses are pointless. Company I spoke to last month said their web designer (one of these all-in-one packages like Yell) said a blog would be good for their company and would improve SEO all for the small fee of £300 + annual maintenance fee. Their business? Scaffolding. Some companies will tell you anything for a bit of cash.

Website for company, and a blog if you have the time to run one is the ideal setup!

It's easy to have a blog as part of a website at very little extra cost...... all depending on what exactly you expect of a website i.e. I am assuming it's not ecommerce. Also on the reverse side, you can have information pages on a blog to incorporate some of the benfits of a website.

I think I have made that sound more complicated than needed.

Hi,

Just set the blog up free on blogger or wordpress etc, and then when you have your website up and running, put a link on there which takes the viewer straight to your blog.

The advantage of having the blog at one of the blog websites is that if you have material to put on it (updates etc) then it will stand alone and get visitors in its own right, who may then come to your website. Needless to say your blog should also have your website as one of your favourite links.

However, as has already been said if your company is not one that has to have frequent updates or is not advertising an industry or product that has mass appeal, I'd stick with the straightforward and informative website, and focus my attention on advertising that as much as possible.
