Website needed

I am looking for a simple 5 page website.
Bar accross the top, HOME, SERVICES, ABOUT US, CONTACT

The home needs a stock image of someone ironing, stock image of someone cleaning or hoovering and some text, like welcome to the site, blah blah blah

The services needs to have a list of services offered, the about us just a picture place and some text and then contact page just needs to be a form, name, email and enquiry

I also need a domain name address

Thanks
Gemma

    Hi Gemma

You could set something like this up yourself using Wordpress in half an hour or so (you don't need to be teccie).

Wordpress is a blog though isnt it? Its not for me its for a friend who wants to do cleaning etc on a self employed basis.

And i have no idea how to add it to the domain or have time

Common misconception there, wordpress was initially a blogging platform but is now a fully functional CMS. It still has it's blogging platform but is more than capable of being a CMS. Some of the webs biggest sites are wordpress based.

Unfortunately wordpress would be out of your budget (if you wanted to use a developer) but if you wanted to get stuck in, then it's probably one of the easiest cms' to use.

    Might take a look,

£300 for 5 pages is just too high at the minute! They are simple pages, she doesnt need SEO or anything fancy.

You would be better off installing wordpress (most web hosts will have an auto installer for this) and using one of the "premium" wordpress themes like thesis, headway etc and building the site that way.

a 5 page website will take roughly 15-25 hours to build and develop, a rough hourly rate for a web developer is £25 per hour.

What is your friends budget? They might be better buying a pre-built site and just having the content edited for their needs.

www.themeforest.net has loads of websites from only $20.

So what was too expensive? So if the bid was a high as £650, would this be too high??! :)

    £9.99 for domain p.a.
    £40(ish) for hosting p.a.

The cheapest option by far template and joomla or wordpress.

If you have all content she needs then that would keep the cost down and not wind whoever you choose up.

But remember a low cost/budget websites tend to be very 'expensive' to set up and 'create' to the 'developer/designer/HTML monkey'!!

Being that in my experience the developer/designer/HTML monkey then spends hours on the phone/emailing with 100's of changes and amendments...asking about SEO, Google Webmaster tools, Analytics, Local Business Center etc etc etc

I can certainly help you but I'm not going to step on the toes of the huge number of web designers who ferquent this forum. I should point out that Wordpress isn't just a blog - all my sites are built on Wordpress (take a look at my signaure links to see some examples).

Its not like a product website though, its 5 static pages, with contact page going to my email address. Could it really take 20 hours to make 5 pages and copy and paste content?

    Gemma

Design = 10 - 15 hours depending on how many changes the client wants
Building -5 hours depending on the structure of the design (3 hours for 1st page, and 2 hours for the final 4).
    Browser testing - 2-3 hours.

This doesn't include back and forth emails and calls.

Unfortunately any decent web developer, doesn't use WYSIWYG software, this means all the code is hand coded.

Honestly 20 hours is a real minimum time for a 5 page site, there is so much more than just copying and pasting content. It has to be tested, checked and built from the ground up.

The last site I did was a 5 page brochure site like this one, and tookl 42 hours in the end, as the client kept changing their mind, adding new stuff and constant emails.

The way to look at a website is not the initial cost, but how much revenue will come from it in the end? Is this their main "marketing" or just a website so people can find them?

I dont really need the SEO on this project

£650 for a 5 page static website with just text. I know how much my ecomerce site cost so i dont thinka static site would be anything near that

    Gemma

Here is a nice comparison you might understand better...

When looking for a pair of shoes! Do you look for the brand, the material, the colour of the style? Depending on what you want, the price is going to vary on each product right? Jimmy Choos cost more than Dr Marten's.

The same with web development, each one will have a set price for their sites (gotta pay our bills some how) and how we build sites will be different. The £650 quote may be from someone offering the marketing experience as well as the website.

£650 for a 5 page site does sound steep but it wholly depends on the developer, their expertise and what you get with the site.

A 5 page site normally starts at £350 upto £1000 depending on who you use, what you want and how quickly you want it. The quicker you want it, the more you will be charged.

If the OP wants to commit to producing all the text which will not be changed, agree to a template up front and be allowed one round of minor corrections then I'm sure the price could come down.

But that obviously means you're paying for a builder/implementer, not a designer.

You could pay £150 for a cheap site which doesn't convert, or £650 for a decent site which does convert. Which is better in the long run?

How patronising are you trying to be? You think as she is a girl she cant possibly understand web design but she knows a nice pair of shoes when she sees them:D

Convert? Well its not really a ecommerce website, just a place for people to look at the services my friend will be offering.

    Her budget is £150 MAX

Wasn't trying to be patronising but was the closest analogy I could come up for a female ;)

For £150 you will be lucky to get someone to build 1 page IMHO.

If you want cheaper, your going to need to cut down on things e.g. maybe use a pre-built template but the template will be used on other websites.

You want a website that doesn't convert? What is the visitor supposed to do when they hit the site? Ring the owner? Email the owner? If so then that's conversion. It's converting visitors into clients / customers.

If you still want the full webdesign service then might be worth putting an advert on peopleperhour.com, freelancer.net and odesk.com. You will most likely get a foreign national doing it dirt cheap.

You can get a website done for £150, easily, but don't expect too much! It won't look superbly pretty or have much in the way of bespoke design or any after sales service as such.

Wordpress is an option but you don't have time to widdle around with that.

5 pages is quite a lot, it can take an hour to do a basic version of each page with the menu and images etc and that's just laying it out.

If you don't get any offers here try People Per Hour

I use WYSIWIG software and hand coding and I can tell you that the WYSIWIG could take your 20 hours minimum down to 10 or 15 hours.

I agree and it always annoys me when people expect you to change your rates for them. To me it's a bit like going into a Comet store and telling them, "I need a 42" plasma screen telly and I have £60. Sell me one".

    Buy cheap pay twice.
