but don't wish to pay a monthly subscription

One thing to bear in mind, that while owning a standalone WordPress website doesn't involve a subscription, it does have a cost of ownership. Firstly you need a host for it to run on, and often cheap hosts won't cut the mustard in terms of desired performance, but additionally a complex system ( such as WordPress ) needs to be maintained, updated, backed-up, monitored, and unless you are going to learn the ropes and do it yourself you will have to pay some one for this.

And what you pay could shock you ( Google Managed WordPress Support and Maintenance ) and certainly would start to make Shopify look cheap.

I don't want to put you of 'owning' your own WordPress site, after all I make my living from WordPress - but at least go in with your eyes open.

I suppose the first question to ask is; why don't you want to pay a monthly subscription? Are there any particular functions that you want your website to have that the popular e-commerce website hosts don't offer?

Do you have the funds/knowledge to create a bespoke website and keep it running?

I'm not sure they can't not pay a month subscription, they are asking for social media help so that will be on going labour costs which weather you call it hourly, retainer or subscription still results in paying £x each month for someone to do it. That's before you get to ongoing maintenance, hosting and support.

I think perhaps they meant something else, but not quite sure what.

Your use of negatives impress me :D

I'm not quite sure what they're getting at then?

    A) Have/acquire the knowledge/skills to create a website, and put the effort in to maintain it.

    B) Pay for one to be created (there are going to be regular fees, hosting etc.. as mentioned above).

Hopefully OP will elaborate and let us know what the crux of this question is..

Forget everything you think you know when it comes to websites, and dont even touch "website designers"

the first thing you need to consider is how the consumer buys, what do they need from your site to buy? Photos are going to be important especially close up ones.
You also need to get a really good sales copy writer, to put together inticing words for each article you are selling; you need to sell the sizzle and not the sausage

You also need a funnel system, let me explain.

    1. you showcase a product, lets say its lingerie for slim women with large breasts
    2. you create a special landing page
    3. on the landing page you create a special offer such as free postage if you like our facebook group or if you sign up here
    4. send the person through to a modelling section; get in the perfect model and show her off in the lingerie. Very much like you see on the shopping channels
    5. offer a discount
    6. person goes to buy, take the payment and then send them to a landing page which is your upsell. Offer something else that may have been shown in the original modelling demo but not offered.
    7. get the person to buy
    8. then send them to another thank you page with another upsell

you might be thinking "wow i have 50 items thats going to cost a lot"
start with one item which is popular and you make decent money on.
use that as a landing page for your ads. Make it pay for itself then build the 2nd page for the next item.
