Website - frontpage....

Hi all,

Question....

As an e-commerce website, we are trying to think of ways we can improve our click through rate to our online shop.

Do you think (in general) it's better to replace a homepage with a shop catagory page and create an 'About us' page instead?

Or

Do you think it's better to keep a home/welcome page and create a seperate shop catagory page??

Hope this makes sense.

Definitely the former. You are wasting valuable screen time. Put your best products on your homepage, as well as links to your best looking categories.

From my experience you can approach the front page content two ways:

1) What do you want the customer to do?
- Once you have answered this question, add content to the page which leads them towards taking these actions (newsletter signup form, best seller products, most popular categories, etc).

2) What is the customer trying to do?
- Once you have answered this question, add content to the page which helps them do this in the easiest and most efficient way possible. If they are looking for a specific type of product range, offer them links which filter this product range down to the specs/type they are looking for, etc.

This is a Marketing question at its core though, but looking at the problem using the above will be a step forward. Now for the Marketing guys to come along and say we are approaching it all wrong (and be entirely correct).

Would think this would depend on how much the shop features in your business.

If your business IS the shop I'd put it up front but if the shop is just one avenue of your business and your produces are available elsewhere then it would make more sense to have it a page in. Really depends on your business and what you are expecting people to visit your site for.
