Website Downtime affect on SEO

Hi all,

Our ecommerce website has been down now for 12 days! The server, and some how apparently the back up server were attacked by some ransomware.

I do not know the in's and out's, there is a possibility all is lost or we may get things back. Our IT provider (they do all of our IT as well as hosting, web design etc.) change the story about what is happening every day so I really do not know what is going to happen.

Any way i am just wondering what will happen to our rankings, if anything due to such a long downtime? Assuming everything is recovered.

Any insight would be appreciated.

If google is visiting regularly then you may lose your ranking. But when the site comes back online Google should put you back where you were before (but they may not).

If it were only a day's outage Google probably wouldn't penalise, but 12 days and counting is a long time.

But change hosts and don't get one company to do everything, keep everything separate.

thanks - we will be changing IT company as soon as we know if they can recover the website data.

We are a little confused since they had us spend a lot of money on various back ups of our own computer systems, and it appears they only had one back up of their own systems which seemed to be a little useless as it was somehow also affected.

Sorry to learn that your site was affected by this attack and down at the moment.

I was at an event last week where they raised this type of security issues and the need for one to have a cyber liability insurance, which can payout after such an attack and help one with the cost of getting back the website. I do not know much about this, but it may be something to look into after restoring back your website
