So you have decided your business needs a new website, and you would like to use a website designer / developer to develop this for you!

Finding a website designer / developer can be a fraught process, as there are so many around and there are no recognised qualifications, so how do you differentiate Web guy 1 from web guy 2?

The terms web designer and web developer are for the most part interchangeable when talking about websites, however;

A Web Designer will usually be more creative and concentrate on the design only or a design implemented into an off-the-shelf Content Management System (CMS) to implement a content based website, this could extend to additional website functionality, e-commerce, forms, maps, and other functionality provided by CMS or plugins.

A Web developer will have the ability to do most of the above with the ability to build more custom/bespoke functionality for a website or web application where actual programming/development might be involved, eg, building a web application or website from scratch with or without a CMS and/or build further functionality not available off-the-shelf. The developer will in this case build something specific, build a plugin, extend the CMS, or just build an application around requirements.

Selecting the person for the job will be down to what your requirements are, if you know you may have bespoke requirements application workflows, it is best to check if they have the skills to do more than just design and get a site up and running using a CMS.

Cost may also come into the equation, depending on the level of designer / developer.

Hope this helps.

It is practically the same difference between an Engineer/Architect and a Designer.

The Developer creates or modifies the code of the webpage, and the Designer only creates the design without heavily modifying the code.

The Designer could have some advanced knowledge of how the pages work, and he could work аrоund the code, but he simply does not have the knowledge to create plugins/аdd-ons and make pаgеs from scratch.

I truly hope that clarifies it.

Cheers.

Developer is a broader concept, i.e. he/she makes everything that is needed for a website to run (from database, coding to visual appearance, including design) and more.

Designer is only works with the view of a website - what visitors see: elements, shapes, colors, etc. The design.
