…the ‘slide show effect’. Main image appears above the four other images only when the visitor clicks on an image - similar to what Uk.yahoo.com has on their homepage under. What is the actual term for this?

You'll find many people call it different things. Where I work we call any section highlighting content a Feature Slot.

Depending on the javascript effect /transition of the content it could be a slider, scroller, etc.

If you're documenting it's use just give it a contextual description at the start of the document.

Am I the only person that hates these?

Anything on a website that moves, automatic music or.....horror of horrors......a speaking animated 'person', and I simply close the site.

It's just me isn't it? I'm a menopausal misery :p

Haha, some of them are dreadful, and I agree, I hate those speaking animations or videos and it frustrates me when you don't have a button to turn them off!
