  • Blog / News
  • Banner Slider
  • Contact / Quote Form
  • Mobile Responsive
  • Training & Support
  • 12 Months Hosting

I'm not able to pitch at this time as we're not taking any more pure design projects until September, but having consulted with a few people recently who came to use for PR after getting a design done I wanted to share a couple of tips to help you decide on a designer:

- don't decide based on just the 'look' of their portfolio sites. assess them for:
- speed: google has a tool for this - https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ - too many people end up with beautiful, slow sites, that will cost them conversions AND a slight drag on their rankings which means less visitors in the first place

- on-site optimisation - run them through an SEO tool and see that the developer at least does most of the basics right. Not all designers are going to deliver perfectly on-site and 100% scores aren't even necessary (some best practices won't be sensible from a cost perspective for all clients) but it should be 'solid'.

- make sure they use one of the commonly used platforms (eg wordpress, but there are many) so it's easy for you to move suppliers in future. I've had to start from 'near enough scratch' with clients where their old supplier used a custom CMS that didn't fit their needs long term at all.

- read some conversion and marketing material on the internet, and ask yourself if their work reflects creation of 'brochure sites' or sites that are likely to be sales engines for your business - think about opt in forms, landing pages, and that kind of thing.

Good luck choosing a vendor, I hope you have a beautiful new site at the end.

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the forums.

Personally I'd recommend getting your hosting and design separate.
You should still be able to get pay monthly design work done without the hosting.

Doing so you'll generally end up with better hosting for a better price, and your hosting is then provided by a company that specialises in that, which can help for quicker around the clock support and for more technical points.

@stevebrownlie gave some great advice too.

Best of luck,

Dan
