Manual penalties can be tricky! I've revoked two following a similar process to webgeek above, depending on the extent and type of penalty you might have to remove quite a few links and/or disavow them.

As a starting point you can go here: majesticseo dot com (one of many link data providers) and input your domain, then check out the anchor text section. Any anchor texts that come up regularly that are commercial keywords and non-brand are probably your problem links, also take note of 'ref domains' section and any domains that have a lot of links to your site, if these links are all with the same anchor text that is probably not going to be good for your either.

I provide a manual penalty removal service so if you don't fancy tackling this yourself just drop me a pm.

Thanks guys, that all really helpful. It sounds like it's a long slog then to get that manual action lifted! I don't have a huge amount of links but many seem to be from directories, PR sites and other useless portals. Most of these have been on there for years but combine that with an increase in links from a spammy Github page and i guess it just tipped things over the edge.

@zigojacko, just to let you know I used your online form on your website around a

@zigojacko sorry got cut off! Used it around a week ago but it didn't seem to work. Seems to be an error with it on safari browsers, the form slides too far down the page when you scroll.

Ah damn. I thought we had that tested in the shortest possible browser windows - thanks for letting me know, we'll get it checked out today. Presumably, you weren't able to hit the send button as it disappears off the bottom of the page?

Hey zigo, the form fits just fine when loaded and I was able to hit send, but no confirm message appeared (may or may not be broken in this respect, not sure if you got the message). The problem regarding scrolling happens when you scroll down the page, the form is obviously meant to scroll with it. On my macbook pro running safari, it actually ends up shooting downwards off the screen.

Please try resending the message (if you still wish to). This issue should now be fixed although we're aiming to make a number of UX improvements to this still in the near future.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
