Hi i have my hosting with 1and1 for the time being does anybody have any suggestions as to a better hosting company. I must admit i have not had a problem with them but was wondering if theres anything better out there.

Thanks

There are plenty good web hosting companies out there. I am with ipage right now and so far I don't have any massive issues with them. You can also go for hostgator. They are world famous. But, if you are looking for cloud servers then I suggest you to check atlantic.net, they are offering $15 free trial credit right now. Free Setup - No Contract & No Commitments. Besides there are Rackspace as well as Amazon who are well known for VPS and cloud providers.

But if you want to test cloud servers for free then visit:

If your websites target audience is uk then it would be a good idea to have a uk web host.

I haven't fully signed up yet but the pre purchase help I got from dan at hihost (ukbf member) was outstanding and it's only my design delay that has halted it till after my holiday!

Depends on what you're hosting, but my personal favourites are UnitedHosting for general hosting. They have decent prices and customer service (although its mostly email based customer service, but that has always been enough for me).

For Wordpress I highly recommend WP-Engine. Haven't come across a Wordpress host that can beat them. Their setup is exceptional and customer service is also very good.

Are you looking for shared hosting, reseller, VPS or dedicated? Do you need managed or unmanaged?

For most cases I'd say give HiHosting a shout. If you need a managed VPS then EUKHost is worth looking at.

I wouldn't use USA hosting for some sites as the transatlantic lag can make the browsing experience less than ideal, despite the fact that Hostgator is cheap and dependable. On other projects, the extra 300ms lag isn't that big of a problem. In other words, I don't mind hosting my feeders and personal sites in USA, but clients deserve the best UK hosting they can afford.

Just as a sidenote regards WebGeek's points.

Both UnitedHosting and WP-Engine provide UK based servers for UK clients, so you're not likely to suffer from any of the lag.

Also, if your site is a high traffic site, i'd avoid VPS's altogether and either go straight to a dedicated server, or go for a company that has a custom infrastructure such as WP Engine. I've worked with a LOT of high traffic sites, and VPS's never fair well. They have all the promise of a dedicated server, but never deliver, and you're always faced with phantom problems that you never seem to get to the bottom of.

EUKHost is OK. I have a few accounts with them myself. Their customer service is better than UnitedHosting, but i've found UH's infrastructure to be a little better on the whole.

I think shared hosting would be ok for now as were not that big just yet. I must admit ive never had a problem with 1and1 but im a bit concerned about the bad press ive been hearing about them.

Does anybody know anything about 1and1's quality of service ?

REMEMBER
Reliability, consistency, server speed, and security are paramount to ensure that your business is being promoted effectively.

The wrong location on a low budget, overloaded, and unreliable server is not a professional platform on which to do business.
Your website is a critical part of your business......and in some cases it might actually be your business! But how seriously do you really take it? You need to know where your site is located, what server security is are in place, and if there are site backups!
If you don't know this information then you are taking chances with your future!

I'd recommend Hostgator to. I've been with them many years and never had an issue. I work as a software engineer, so am pretty clued up to what I need from a hosting company, and have never had any issues with them at all.

Great customer service. Good prices of the shared hosting packages, but their VPS are expensive IMO.

I think a smaller company is usually better. Not a tiny, one-man band but a small thriving hosting company that still cares enough about it's customers to go the extra mile for them in support. I've used Nethosted a lot in the past for those reasons and they've always been great.
