Hi, basically I need new hosting as my web design company currently host my site on their servers but I don't have suffecient access to the files etc.

So I need to host it on my own servers. About my site:

Small to medium business, have two seperate site with diff content, .com and .co.uk. We retail security clothing and outdoor clothing www.safeguardclothing.co.uk

Also have an SSL certificate Ill need on my new hosting.

Do I get my own dedicated, or shared?

Anyone got any company recommendations for both which are cost effective and reliable, I know some dedicated servers can go upto like £100 a month which is too expensive atm.

Thanks,
Tom

Did not know where to host, eventually went with an american company called slicehost. We Got the basic slice for $20 a month and host everything there (even my CRM). They have an excellent customer support.

I hope this helps.

Tom,

Carl's question is the most important one... Do you have the technical ability to run your own server 24/7 and keep it fully secure and patched etc.

If yes, then give it a go.... if not, it's a steep learning curve (and can actually end up quite expensive), so I'd suggest you consider looking to a professional hosting firm to help you.

I cannot stress enough that you get what you pay for... don't base your decision solely on cash..., there's so much more to consider including support, infrastructure, bandwidth, backup etc etc....

I certainly agree with the others, in that to run a dedicated server you will need to do a lot more than simply be concerned with the hosting.

It can also cost a lot more than £100 (we pay well above this), but for your needs I'd expect the lower end servers would suffice - although shared hosting for 2 websites/stores with an SSL certificate would probably prove easier and overall best value.

Some years ago I had used CrystalTech for shared hosting and they were quite good overall.

Tom, you don't need a full server for two sites like that. All you need is a decent level of access. PM Carl, who asked the most salient question, to say exactly what you need by way of access and see what he has to offer on shared hosting. You could ask me, too, and there are other good hosting company owners and reps on these forums.

I probably don't need a dedicated server.

Basically got like 2 sites with around 40-50 pages each. need to also hsot 2 ssl certificates. Need email address etc etc.

Needs to be v.reliable (no down times), and secure (no hacks on ssl server)

Also need someone to migrate it
