Web hosting... any recommendations?

It could be something to do with Virgin, but it only affects my Control Panel and two very small and insignificant sites and Vidahost's site.

Could this be a problem local to my PC ?

Possibly, or at least localised to your connection/ISP - depends on how it's routing from you to the host, what equipment it goes through etc.

It appears that both my ISP and and/or webhost had some problems, I have been without internet half the day (Like having an arm cut off)
Now it is up and running again, and my Host's site is looking good again.

May have been a combination of both or something techie, who really knows ?

I use Inmotion Hosting. Not UK based but they have won many awards, are reasonably priced and i've never had any problems. You get all the usual C Panel control.

To put the record straight. I have no problem with Vidahost, they have been very very helpful since I have used them.
My problem is almost surely my ISP and local to my area.

I don't think that it is mandatory to have the hosting from UK company to host UK based sites. Hence the choice is open.

I find Domus Europa Communications a wonderful host for interactive websites: their servers and domains are outside UK so it gives you an extra freedom to have the blog as you like. Their in-house programmers can really customize your blog site quickly and as you like and the costs are really very low (they are promoting their business internationally!)

I've checked my usage stats on CPanel:
* Disc space used - 860 MB
* Sub-domains - 4
* SQL databases - 5
* Monthly bandwidth between 1 - 1.2 GB

I'd definitely question the increase assuming of course it wasn't a special offer initially.

And I'm obviously completely biased, but shared hosting for that level of usage is definitely available - from many hosts on here

Today just hosting is a desperate job where internet companies try to attract clients proposing cheap hosting hoping for other more lucrative operations.
When they discover you are just interested in pure hosting, you become for them a "lemon" so they charge more they can: next year I bet will increase again. However that price can be competitive or not, depends how you see the operation: certainly you can find cheaper hosts (for the reasons as above). Good luck.

That's ridiculously expensive unless you have a lot of disk space available to you that you're not using. However in that case, you'd be better of with a smaller plan that has enough resources but doesn't cost so much.

To put it into perspective, we provide that and more, with a free domain name and powered by CloudLinux servers for £20, so I would switch, especially if the service isn't great.

That is at least twice what you should be paying from most hosting companies. We would charge £39.90 per year and still give you room for expansion.
