If your flexible about the UK hosting, try Siteground, I'm with them and I paid something like £4 for the first year with one of they're offers, currently £4 a month. The trick is to start the join up phase, then click back one before you're due to commit, at that point they make an extra offer halving the cost.

Check em out anyway, for a blog, unless your looking for a huge user base, I don't think US hosting will have any detrimental effect. It hasn't for me and I run my web design business through them.

    I'll pm you the link.

Our basic package at £17/year +VAT will get you up and running nice and quickly, and if it's a new blog you need to setup, you can choose to install Wordpress on our order form and it'll take care of it - saving you what would otherwise be only a few two clicks in cPanel! :)

    Another vote for Vidahost.

I've been with several hosts in my time, but now I have everything hosted by them.

Can't fault them, competitive prices and great support when I've needed it.

I think these guys (vidahost) are growing their business on the good old fashioned premise of looking after their customers. More than happy to recommend them.

Thanks - you're exactly right, a huge amount of our business comes from word of mouth. A small percentage comes from Google/advertising.

We have a new site launching soon with some very exciting new products, a larger team (don't worry, no sellout or cheap/outsourced/remote employees, all people who work on the actual servers and live within 10 minutes of the datacentre!), shiny new office and possibly a third datacentre location for our clients to use :)

    Rackspace is they way forward!!!!!

You've already posted this yesterday, are you an affiliate or something

Further more, the OP wants to host a simple blog - Rackspace would be overkill (not offering Shared Hosting) - the OP would have to go with a Cloud Server or Dedicated Server which is just pointless for a simple blog.

    Jose ,

Thats really a tough job to find some reliable hosting solution where you might find 99.99 uptime as said, I would recommend nitGreen(dot) C0m , the setup is free while the hosting start from 2.49 per month only with fully loaded cPanel with all softwares and utilities.

    Cheers!

    Have a look at 34sp :)

I have used them for close to ten years and have gone from a basic starter package to a couple of dedicated servers!

I used 34sp years and years ago and I couldn't for the life of me remember their name. I almost gave up so thanks for bringing them to my attention. :)

Thx for the all the replies and suggestions. I will look into some of the options as suggested here.

Vidahost take care of all our hosting requirements.

There's a lot to be said for a company that seems to be always investing in itself, returns phone calls, and deals with enquiries in an efficient manner.

And I can speak to a human who understands things and wants to help!

I'd recommend any small good quality web hosting company.
Linux and cpanel is generally the way to go, and a decent one click installer such as Softaculous.

You may want to go with a provider that offers dedicated blog hosting.

We offer starter blog hosting from just £1/month or £10 per year, as opposed to our web hosting which is £2/month.
This also includes a free domain name, so is a loss leader. Like many sensible small businesses we depend on recommendations, so rather than spend a lot on marketing we offer products like that to allow us to show our level of service.

You can select Wordpress and it'll be installed for you, or you can use the one click installer. Using dedicated blog hosting means you get an environment optimised for wordpress and other blogs.

If you're interested, just google our name.

Live chat should be available if you have any questions.

Good luck with whatever you choose. :)

I would recommend nethosted simply because they have great customer support and hosting. It's very rare to find a hosting company that responds within 15 Minutes. They are very technically minded too, meaning they know practically anything you throw at them and solve it.

What I have learnt is that hosting packages tend to be more or less the same in as far as they are Servers and Software at the end of the day. In other words, the servers can more or less run themselves but to have a good reliable customer service is the next best thing.

I cannot disagree with much that has been said above but, I would also stress that whilst the big boys will provide you with an excellent service, you are one of millions of customers so its never going to be personal service in a million years. It is also true that one server does not differ wildly from another so to me there are important differences that small businesses need to look for (besides saving money).

    1) is getting to know someone who can walk and talk them through the learning curve over a long period until they become self proficient in managing their hosting services and

    2) The ability to provide another small company with business in return.

To me it comes down to my customers like working with me because I do what is best for them - I give them a good service, if that has nothing to do with the hosting and everything to do with them getting or keeping their website online, thats okay because thats what I am there for.

Yes, you could go with the big names, but there are a lot of small hosting companies out there (not just mine) who provide specialist help. My forte is joomla - I love the bloody thing and do everything with it - so, if you have or want a joomla site and want somebody to help you with it - I'm here, ready and waiting.

So, don't just buy cheap every day hosting - buy personal small business hosting - because its about building relationships, contacts and goodwill and getting more back than the cost of your hosting in terms of real value.

    Good luck whatever you do.

On the subject of hardware there is a difference - quality server-grade hardware will always provide higher uptime than cheaper options.

eg - some low-end providers use tower servers rather than "proper" servers still

But aside from appearance - it's the reliability of the hardware, ability to easily work on systems and swap hardware, especially disks - for example hot-swap is essential because disks do ocassionally fail.

Moving up from that a good host will know how to configure the system optimally / probably have a good standard setup.

Some larger hosts, as Les says, just don't have the personal service. Indeed I saw a report from a client of one of the larger hosts here who was moving away because they were clueless on basic things. And he was paying a fortune for a tower server with cheap disks, rubbish RAM level etc. I won't name the provider but it was a  moment!

Too many people get away with too much BS in this industry because it's so complex to the end user, kinda how mechanics can rip off unsuspecting motorists.

Commission-driven salesman, complex industry plus non-technical end-user = pay day for sales guy :(

Talking about service, Dominic and his company Vidahost saved me some major embarrasment today, owing to an oversight that I'd made.

I was off to visit a prospect and I rang Vidahost to ask about a hosting detail. And I mentioned that I was going to see someone and show them a test site I'd done a bit ago.

Anyway, I put the phone down and thought no more of it. Travelling in the car and Dominic rings me up out of the blue to clarify which site I was talking about. Before going out I'd changed the database config and it appears I hadn't done it right and Firefox was showing me a cached page.

He must have looked at the website I mentioned, seen it offline, rang me up ... and then he fixed it.

    How AWESOME is that?

I don't know where else you would get such service as that. Saved my bacon today.

    Top Marks Dominic! and Vidahost

I am having problems logging on to Vidahost CP, and my sites are very slow to load.
Has anyone else who is using them noticed any problems ?

No problems for me - have just visited my main site hosted by them (www.dotsandspots.co.uk) and it seems to be loading up fine.

Visited the cPanel of another of my sites with them, again no problems. connected through it to a database via phpMyAdmin and ran some queries - again all seemed to be working well.

    Sorry!
