Hi all

Myself and my brother are going into business shortly, if all continues to go well, we have a business name, getting a logo sorted etc but jst struggeling for a good slogan.

We are going to be selling mainly cakes and traybakes, sandwhiches and farm food items, but the main emphasis is on cakes, not wedding cakes or anything just your nice every day homemade cakes/muffins/brownies etc

Our business name is F.J Cakes & Bakes, werent sure on that to be honest but people like it, so it stuck, any ideas on slogans would be appreciated ;)

2 we had thought of:

1. Making life sweeter
2. Pudding things right

You really don't want anything funny.
It does not go with the name which simply says what you do.
I cannot see why you need a slogan.
Your name says it all.
What is the slogan adding?

If you want to strengthen your niche start of by working out (and writing down) what you are promising your customer and why they would come to you instead of another.

Then make sure everything in the business is telling the same story from decor, to boxes, to publicity and only if you have to to a slogan.
Anything else will just confuse and detract.

No-one here knows you, your cakes or your target market so no-one else can (without a lot more information) give you any sort or sensible suggestion!

Fair comment, will take that on board :) we have planned things well out, and hadnt really thought of a slogan until now, so perhaps it is indeed just an afterthough and something we dont need, we have though through the other points of the business though

Killerdog...

In some areas, fudging does not always mean the nicest of things...

That's all I'm going to say on that matter! ;)

With regards to a slogan, personally I don't believe you need one.

Keep the name classic and descriptive, forget about the slogan... if you have something funny with all due respect to the millions of companies out there who already may have something "daft" it just belittles the companies name and goals.

Put it this way... I use to have an Electrical Wholesalers, my line was

"A Local supplier for Local People"

Being a huge TLOG fan I couldn't resist... but, you know what... not one person got it! Not a single person commented on the underlining of the line.

Idiots! :D

The brand name and slogan don't always sit well together, it very much depends on your target customers.

Just my opinion, but initials in brand names don't work for me, TJ Hughes, TK Maxx are examples that annoy me, they dont say anything about the brand.

Marks & Spencer were always Marks & Spencer, even though they use M&S in their advertising.

The key is to build the brand name first, in the OP's case I would look at what the FJ stands for "Fitzgerald & James" conjours up an image of a high class baker, whereas "Fred & Jimmy's" offers a completely different picture, so what does FJ Cakes say?

Once the brand or concept of the brand is established, then look at straplines based on what the offering is at the time, launching a premium quality line with a strapline of Pudding things right does not sit right.

Differentiate between slogans and tag line.

A slogan, IMHO is for an advertising campaign, and that is where the jokey suggestions are going, but you don't need that yet.

A tag line adds some extra explanation of your brand name, your brand already has Cakes & Bakes in it. So you may not need a tag line, so the question is what else do you want to say about your business. Chris Ashdown suggests Quality which is a good idea, maybe healthy, may be cheap, maybe reassuringly expensive - you know what your business wants to stand for.

As an example, with a brand like ours (llocally), which is not very descriptive, but hopefully memorable, the tag line is relatively easy to compose (Website packages for local and start-up businesses.) because it has to describe fully what we do.

    Appreciate the feedback :)

I personally, thinking along the says lines as Roibot. We chose the name FJ cakes & Bakes becase its simple, uses our initials and explains briefly what we do, perhaps a tagline is uneccessary, it was something to enquire about though.

We will definately keep referring back to the thread for the future, and thanks again for the comments

I understand why you ask, at the moment no, though we have both done cake decorating courses etc, our main emphasis is on your typical home baked foods, just done properly. Not so much birthday, wedding cakes etc though they are something we could look at upon request, so shipping isnt something we are looking at to start of with
