Has anyone out there got much experience of vps hosting yet? is it as quick as a lower level dedicated host? Thinking of moving over to it so was hoping for a few thoughts on the subject.

Cheers

I use a VPS for all my sites - I've never encountered any speed issues.

I'm not too knowledgeable about the that technical side of things, but it's my undestanding that there's many other factors that will influence the speed more. (server specs, server load, bandwidth etc)

Hopefully someone else who is a bit more savvy will be along in a mo....

The biggest factor will be the number of VPS nodes that are on a server. The more VPS nodes a provider places on the box, the more resources will be required to ensure that the nodes are all up to speed.

You also need to bear in mind that having a VPS is similar to a dedicated box in that you will be responsible for the security and management of the software unless it is managed for you.

In terms of costs, they vary dependent on the level opf sercvice. We can offer VPS servers from as little as £7.95 + vat per month but my advice would be to go as high as your budget allows simply to ensure you have enough RAM and disk space to support your sites.

Definitely looking for UK hosting. Phil, When are you looking to get the Windows VPS up and running? would Openmind be ok with me loading Coldfusion 8 on? Also how many domains would be covered in the plesk licence?

sorry for all the questions but I am was impressed with your prices.

No host should mind you asking questions.. knowledge is power afterall :)

One of the things I would say you need to ask is how many and what type of HDDs do they have in the VPS Server.

Disk I/O will typically be the big bottleneck on a server (RAM can be added and CPUs dont tend to be maxed out as much as Disk I/O)

If they're using SATA drives.. be weary.
If they're using SAS Drives, ask how many.. anything < 3 and I'd again be weary (although it would obviously depend on how many nodes they have on the box)

    Ask ask ask :)

I currently have a dedicated server which is costing too much for my liking but is lovely and fast but I also have a shared Ip solution which I put most of my miscellaneous stuff on and it is this that is constantly freezing/crashing so as long as it sits somewhere between the two (more towards dedicated of course!!) then I am happy, especially as it seems to be cheaper than what I pay for shared hosting! I will ask the hardware questions though as a point of caution.

    Cheers guys.

    Hopefully in the next quarter...

You may install any software you wish as long as it's legally licensed ;)

CF8 is a bit of a resource hog though so I would definitely be looking towards the higher end VPS/dedicated
Also how many domains would be covered in the plesk licence?
As mentioned, the VPS server do not come with software installed although Webmin is a good open source panel. Plesk is available on the dedi boxes up to unlimited domains.
sorry for all the questions but I am was impressed with your prices.
It's what you pay for and what you should expect :)

No worries. As a comprison, the following spec server would be fine for CF8 although on a dedi basis:

Processors: Dual Core Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz
    Memory: 2GB RAM
    Hard Disk: 1x 160GB 7,200rpm
OS: Windows Server 2003 Standard 32 bit (SP2)
    Bandwidth: 4,000GB Bandwidth Per Month
    Port Speed: Dedicated 100Mbit Port

    £75 + vat per month

I've left the control panel pricing off as there are quite a few options...

How onerous is that for someone just running a basic LAMP setup where everything is pretty well-known open source stuff? Do web providers really provide no admin services with their basic packages? I'd always assumed that at least the key daemons (e.g. Apache, MySQL, etc) would be included in whatever internal "are they still alive" stuff that the hosting provider had running to monitor their shared hosting services and that they would at least reach inside a customers VPS instance and restart something basic like Apache if it crashed.
