Virus Checker Etc

I need to get some kind of paid subscription to fully check and protect a single laptop.

I am somewhat paranoid about googling for this stuff as I am certain that what happens is you land on dodgy links that screw your p.c in advance of you having protection

So can someone recommend me a good comprehensive service, something that will protect my computer and keep it running fast

thanks

I dont think you need to be that paranoid about it. We are re-sellers of some products, and whilst I have a favourite, if you ask 10 different IT companies you will probably get 10 different answers. the important thing for PC users in particular is to have some AV protection. I don't like Norton or McAffee. I like Avast Free and Microsoft security Essentials (also free). for paid version, I would probably go for Avast again...

If you don't want to use Google, just go to

If you go for free, I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Just a bit of an info that tech supports of Dell use Malwarebytes to scan computers via remote, so that is a sign that it is indeed useful.

Though you could choose among lots of AV programs out there. Most of them are accurate as long as you update them often. Though I'd choose Eset and Kaspersky as personal preference.

If you are still in doubt, better add security plugins into your browser, like adblock plus for Firefox and Chrome.

Here's an article to help you protect your computer from attacks. I hope this will be of good use.

Another vote for ESET here.

It's also hassle free when it comes to renewing or adding more devices etc.

Having had really bad experiences with other companies when the renewals were absolutely chaotic and involved reloading software, duplicated billing etc, this is an important aspect for me.

When it come to AV it's one of those things that is really worth spending a small amount of cash on to be honest...

I have to disagree with you, the products that you get free are free for a reason because they lack protection to the paid products, your going to get viruses no matter what but less on paid products excluding McAfee as its a crap software.

That's why it's worth paying for or am I missing your point? :|

I like going to av comparatives to see how anti virus products stack up in the there latest test file detection out of 136610 samples Gdata come first with 99.9%, ESET come 10th with 97.5%.
Was a surprise to see norton last with 91.2%, Microsoft security essentials was 2nd from bottom with 92.0%.
Microsoft security essentials started off as a good product a lot of techs were raving about it but sadly its died a slow death and is still lagging behind in detection rates.

Not necessarily. Clamav is absolutely free and highly effective.

The important thing to understand is that *none* of the AV products are perfect, and therefore cannot be relied upon as the sole means of virus protection.

Clamav you must be the only using it lol, I don't rate it or it is not that effective, you may think it is but how do you know what is going on the background, just because its not alerting you to any viruses you could have stacks of viruses and not even realize.

Taking avast a example in the free version you get this

    Blocks viruses & spyware
Allows assistance from a geek friend

In the paid version you get

    Blocks viruses & spyware
Allows assistance from a geek friend
    Secures shopping & banking
    Runs risky programs safely
    Blocks hacker attacks
    Secures personal data
    Stops annoying SPAM
    Blocks phishing scams

so its a no brainier which you should buy hence like i said free versions lack protection.

There are many good free and paid for AV products out there it's fair to say. But as already mentioned by others here none can be guaranteed to be 100% effective.

So that's why another very important tool in your armoury is good backups. Make sure you take backups on a regular basis. And with many other things backups are about: Location, Location, Location. Never, ever just take backups on the USB drive and leave it with your PC. Whatever happens to the PC could well happen to the backups too.

I don't know how tech savvy you are but the things I consider include the following:

Depending on your level of paranoia and what's behind that, if it is a problem and you got the hardware capacity install a small virtual machine - it's not rocket science and costs nothing to get an Ubuntu distro running - you wont have the issue with viruses on the scale that Windows does (if at all). Oracle VirtualBox is free and industry standard. Surf from that if it gives you more comfort.

Another consideration, most people don't have 6TB of attached storage - I do for business reasons. If you have a lot of storage make sure the one you select you can opt out of scanning certain folders/disks otherwise it will run for days doing a weekly scan and 20%+ of your CPU will remain committed.

Ok returned to this after a few days and I am now worried again!

I do not care what it costs to protect the machine i just want it properly protected!

Any consensus on what else should be added if anything?

There are too many sodding options I just want realtime protection that works!

Opinions will always be divided on this sort of thing but if you go for a decent AV product like AVG, Avast, or ESET you can't really go too far wrong. I personally use AVG for all of my customers and have not so far had a virus drop through the net. It also provide a whole raft of other protection as well. But also remember your (regular) backups.
