Hi all,

This is a bit of a preliminary idea but would like a bit of help as I don’t really know where to get started!!

I would like to start shipping over clothing from small Vietnamese clothing brands to the UK and reselling on a website.

What sort of things would I have to do to get started with this?!

Is this legal?
What tax would I have to pay?!

Are there any other implications that I might run into whilst doing this?

I’m a complete beginner so all help is really really appreciated!

Thanks!

What research have you done so far and what sites have you visited for information?

That will give you a solid background.

Start with gov.uk website for all the legal aspects to importing.

There is a lot of information available on this site, that should cover most of your initial enquiries.

Find a supplier, place an order, pay for it, get them to ship it to the UK, sell it.

    VAT and, if applicable, duty.

Are you intending to check whether the clothes are being produced ethically, and not by a small child in a sweatshop?

It's the 'sell it' bit that's the tricky part - especially in the fashion/clothing industry.

As above what research have you carried out so far which makes you think this clothing will sell in the UK
    Thanks for the reply.
In terms of what research I have carried out-
I have had a Depop account for around a year selling pre-owned Vietnamese clothing and the sales have gone through the roof!

Really excited to build on this and turn it into something bigger!

    Does that answer your question?!

Thanks for all of the replies!

My main concern was the legality of re selling another companies clothing.

As I mentioned previously, I’m totally new to this and don’t know if I would get in any trouble selling someone else’s brand at an increased profit?

The actual ordering, and starting up the website isn't an issue at all.
I'm more concerned about the legality of the operation and what legal/taxation obstacles i may face getting the items here and selling the items! Hope that all makes sense.

Thank you for the reply, all of this is much appreciated!

It's perfectly legal. The taxes you will face are VAT, duty (if applicable), and all the usual taxes that a business will have.

You will need an EORI number, but I assume you already have one of those.
