So from the chancellors announcement last week businesses won’t have to pay their VAT due now until end of June and any VAT on sales from now until end of June won’t have to be paid until next year (I think it’s Feb 2021 isn’t it?). Not sure on the exact dates; my question is:

- I have a return for the period ending February 29th 2020 due on 5th April 2020. So I submit this as usual?
- will HMRC take the payment on 12th April 2020 if I do?
- should I cancel my direct debit just in case?

Any payments due between 17th March 2020 and 30th June 2020 can be deferred until 5th April 2021.

I would cancel your direct debit just in case although the deferral is automatic and no claim as such needs to be made.

Yes, you still complete and file your VAT return as normal.

Thanks Adam! I have a return due on 5th that covers June 2019 to Feb 29 2020. HMRC messes up my MTD switch over (their words) and so I was going to complete one return that comprised 3, so I guess I’m lucky if I don’t have to hand over the money until next year. Do you know what would happen for my return for 1st March 2020 to 31st May 2020? I imagine we file that in July, but not sure if the money will be deducted then or in future (or if there will be another announcement in future).
