Hello,

HMRC called me asking me for invoices of my purchases along with ledgers.

For some reason they only accept this information through fax.(????)

Do I have to fax to them every single invoice I have or just the major ones? In your experience after faxing how long does it take to get repaid?

In my experience it is usually just the big ones. A list of all invoices on which VAT has been claimed might be a help.

It can take a few weeks to get a refund, unless any of the invoices are queried.

What do you mean by "It can take a few weeks to get a refund, unless any of the invoices are queried." Who/How can one query an invoice and how that would expedite the procedure?

Did you want to say that it can take weeks if an invoice is queried by them? Would they actually call/write to a company and check?

It is a few years since I dealt with this but probably three or four weeks. HMRC want to see that there is evidence that you are actually due the refund so the invoices have to be valid VAT invoices, ie valid VAT number quoted, VAT correctly calculated etc.

Its not unusual for HMRC to ask for documents to be sent by fax they dont use emails but are you absolutely certain the request is from HMRC?

Yes HM Revenue & Customs does have a VAT unit - in days of old they used to be separate but they are together now.
