Hi - I have just made my 1st ever VAT payment, I totally forgot to include my VAT number on the ref field so I have just send HMRC a few £k with no link to my account. Classic.

I know its likley not going to be lost but I also I know that it is due at the end of the month - I will give them a call on Monday to discuss.... Has anyone done anything like this before? How much chaos do you see this been to fix

I never pay anything via bank transfer and assumed the ref number would be on the next screen after pressing next but it wasnt......

Don't worry - they will track it down eventually with your help. As long as you are talking to them about it they are very unlikely to do anything punitive.

As a matter of interest, is this an MTD VAT return?

I actually couldnt tell you but I dont think so, I try to stay as far away from all this stuff as possible. We pressed the thing is Xero to submit it waited two days, checked the balance in the thing you log into for hmrc and then transferred the money (with no ref number). I dont think that counts as MTD, Ill get someone to sort it all that side of things out once Ive fixed my own mess!

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it (actually that’s a lie as I personally probably would as I like to beat myself up over these sorts of things).

As Noah mentioned HMRC will find it eventually anyway, it may jut be a case of persevering until you speak to the right person. You may even hit the jackpot and speak to that person on Monday morning.

Imagine the absolute worst case scenario where you are hauled in front of a judge for non payment of VAT - you can very easily show that you made a payment for the correct amount, into the correct account before it was due, and they’d probably be thrown out of court for not finding it.

Sleep well and enjoy a worry free Sunday.

They will find it by tracking the bank account number it was transferred from. You will also be able to provide them with amount, date and even time it was transferred, they will find it no problem.

I’d love to be able to see that VAT account mount up, the numbers must be insane!

Whilst you are on with HMRC, set up a Direct Debit mandate with them. That way the payment is automatic, several days latter, and always with their reference.

I don't like DD either, but HMRC always takes the amount you tell them, and they always take it at the last possible date. Well after you would normally pay yourself. So it helps cash flow.

To be fair, they're a decent bunch on the end of the phone at HMRC and you're probably assuming the worst. Not worth losing sleep over.

This is a different group of people than every time I have called them?
I'd use a lot of words for HMRC, would never have thought 'decent' would apply.
Perhaps I'm simply speaking to the wrong people.
