VAT period reference help

Hi, I have an HMRC form that I'm filling out that asks for my VAT period reference numbers. I file my VAT returns using Quickbooks and I can't find anywhere that says the period references. Guidance on the HMRC site says that (for example) June 2012 is 06-12, but what do I put down to represent the 3 month VAT periods?

e.g. if my VAT period runs between 1st May and 31st July 2012, would the period reference be 05-12 or 07-12 or something else?

The reference will be 07-12. The reference is just the month and year in which the return period ends.
