Is anyone else having trouble getting through on the vat helpline number. I have been trying since a week gone Monday and all I am getting is an "I'm sorry, we are very busy" message.

Yes, it's been the same with us. Endlessly on hold.

I know there was a strike for two days but I have been trying for a fortnight.

The HMRC Helpline is suffering from a meltdown of sorts for the last two months now.

It is well documented, discussed on forums and is being raised at the highest levels amongst the tax proffesional community. Even those who work in Tax cannot get through, so you're not alone.

We're at least proposing HMRC tell you straight away and then cut you off rather than make you go through hops, hold on and then cuit you off, but cannot see any improvement in the near future.

With year end accounts due, the switch to online VTA returns from April for thousands of businesses, etc, it'll take a while before it settle downs before next April and more VAT changes/year ends.
