Vat check online

I know we can check VAT numbers online nowadays. But can anyone remember when that became possible?

I tried to check a VAT number years ago but couldn't. think it was about 2010'ish. Then earlier this year we thought we had a dodgy VAT invoice but turned out it was after checking.

Cant vouch for its accuracy but Google says -

HMRC launched their current UK VAT number checker service on the GOV.UK website around December 1, 2020. This service was introduced specifically because, following the UK's exit from the European Union, UK company VAT details were no longer maintained on the EU's VAT Information Exchange System (VIES).
The VIES system, which allowed for checking EU VAT numbers (including the UK's at the time), has been in operation for much longer, with name and address details for valid UK VAT registration numbers (VRNs) available through it from as early as January 2010.
The current HMRC checker allows users to confirm if a UK VAT number is valid and retrieve the registered business name and address.

I Googled it as I wondered when it was.
