I cancelled my clients VAT registration, but he hasn't received confirmation letter. Does he still need to pay VAT?

Thank you for reply. I've deregister on line on 25th of October from the 1st of November 2018.

As you've deregistered online, HMRC will notify you via your online portal. See https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration/cancel-registration

If not received within 3 weeks, the official guidance is to contact HMRC's VAT General Enquiries teamfor confirmation of the official deregistration date.

When you submit a final return, it will normally say 'final' on your VAT account. Look at your previous VAT return to see the period to which it relates.

However, I wouldn't be surprised, depending on whether your client has reclaimed any VAT, if HMRC open an enquiry due to the length of time they were VAT registered.

That's really unusual that you've not heard anything from HMRC. I'd contact them immediately.
