Hi,

I have just set up my company and not VAT registered.

I understand that because of this I don't charge my customer VAT (until I approach £80k turnover and need to register).

My question is if I am buying raw materials from the EU (Czech republic to be specific) will they charge me VAT if I am not registered.

Thanks

Yes.

In theory no, but in reality yes, because the rest of Europe doesn't care about strange UK tax laws and just ask for a VAT number. In the rest of Europe, the VAT number and the company reg. number are one and the same, so the VAT number is all they want to supply you VAT-free.

Even Wickes and several other UK suppliers and wholesale outfits ask for a VAT number to prove you are a business.

Yes you will get charged VAT if its applicable.
Same way you would if you went into your local supermarket and purchased things.

We all pay VAT all our lives, just some businesses buying from elsewhere in the EU can avoid being charged it.
