VAT Advice

Hi,

I have just had a company asking me to send them a VAT invoice for a purchase they made from me over a year ago, before I went VAT registered...

They are adamant that I can send them one???

I am sure that they are wrong as I would be creating a VAT invoice for a sale where I was not registered for VAT and therefore have not paid my section of the VAT on that sale to HMRC??

Who is right me or my customer???

You can send them a duplicate of the invoice. It won't be a VAT invoice though as you were not VAT registered at the time.

As John says.

I'd presume they claimed the VAT back at the time, are now going through a records check and therefore need a VAT invoice to back it up...which they of course won't get.
