Hi

I have a small business that specialises in short dated confectionery.

Recently few of my customers have suggested that I should start offering value boxes, or family boxes of £10 worth with a mixture of cakes, drinks and cereals etc.

The concept is a bit like a degusta boxes but it won't be subscription based. I have already factored that some items that I will include in the box maybe be disliked by the customer.

My customers tell me that having such boxes would save them a trip to town and its adds to the mystery and anticipation.

Firstly before venturing into this lane please could you kindly share you're thoughts and ideas. Also is there ways of clearly making my customers fully aware what they can expect to avoid any disappointment.

Regards

Firstly you say feedback from customers is that having a box would add to mystery and anticipation and then you say you want to make your customers fully aware of what they can expect to avoid disappointment....which is it?

Have you looked at how others provide a similar service?

Most obvious way seems to have a variety of boxes based on products that are most popular..

Carry out some market research with your customers to help shape your offer

Name it family value box to contain basic family necessities. Customers need to know what the boxes contain. These boxes will contain basic necessities, not luxuries. You can associate luxuries with mysteries and anticipation but not necessities.

What I meant from my statement is that some customers are not fussed as to what they are getting as they have families and all they want is some goodies to keep their children quite.

I know this because occasionally I will get a request to either do a certain mix for a certain amount and has always gone down well. Most of my items are branded such as cadburys, Maryland etc. Looking at degusta boxes there feedback is a mixture of happy customers and unhappy customers and they are succesful. What other market research could you recommend me please.

Blind boxes are all the rage now, if you look at kids toys of blind bags, and even adult blind boxes for collectibles, its a huge market, people willing to pay £10 on a single box they don't know whats inside and if they already have it to try and complete a set of 16 characters

What you could do is potentially make an order system where people can choose X of 1 category, y of category 2 and z of category 3 to build up their own value box
or even give them the choice for Fully random... that allows you to satisfy people wanting to know what they will get or wanting the full surprise

But even things like the Zavvi mystery box at £20 a month.... they have 4 ranges now, one retro, one gaming, 1 geeky, and another for something else.... and in those people know they will get the value of atleast £20, they wont like everything ... but it shows how popular they started it with just the one box type and are now on 4 styles of box (yes I'm subscribed to 2 of them lol)

What were you're experiences of being a customer of subscription based boxes? Thankfully I like to believe I have an advantage as I only specialise in confectionery goods I cannot envisage much too go wrong?

I want to keep it simple and I don't know how to pitch it to my customers??

Blind bags and boxes for collectibles I don't quite like... I don't believe in buying 100 items to collect 16 (and as I have no friends to swap with it doesn;t help lol)
When the Lego Minifig come out, 3 of us buy a case together as there are 3 complete sets in each case

With Zavvi however it is all Geeky or Retro Gamey Items - These I love and enjoy, because I know I will like certainly £20's worth of items - there is excitement and anticipation for the box

I also get FreshHello - which is a food box.... I get 3 meals a week... I get a weeks notice of what I'm getting and can swap between 5or so dishes from the 3 they pick.... This I like as it lets me try things I'd never consider trying as well as being able to look in case there is something I know I specifically wont like and thus can swap it

    Hope this helps

Thanks TLMartin that gives me an insight. Looking into this sector it's still relatively new and there's no sign of slowing down however I've decided that I might combine the two with convenience and mystery. As I buy all sorts of confectionery there's always something for the families and some random unusual chocolates.

I only plan to deliver local within the town that i operate my business plan and I plan to make the box for the value of £10. With £10 you can get lots of items.
