Using Spare 2GB DDR3 1333MHz module

Following an upgrade of another machine I have (from 2gb to 8gb) the above memory module is now spare.

A second machine I bought a bit later than the one above already has a single 4gb module installed of the above spec, so I was wondering if I used the 2gb module in the spare memory slot, would it be seen and utilised?

I realise that the gain in performance won't be that great as it has 4gb already, but as the spare is sitting on my desk doing nothing it seems a shame not to put it to use.

Anyone help please?

Hi David,

Have you checked to see if you already have a 64bit OS? The info Subbynet is quite correct that you need one for it to recognise over 3GB, but I can't see you mention anywhere that it's not 64bit (especially as it already has 4GB of ram installed).

If you are unsure of how to check:

Windows Vista or 7:

  1. Click Start type system in the Start Search box, and then click "system" in the Programs list.
  2. the operating system is displayed as follows:
    • For a 64-bit version operating system: 64-bit Operating System appears for the System type under System.
    • For a 32-bit version operating system: 32-bit Operating System appears for the System type under System.
Windows XP:

View System Properties in Control Panel
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
  3. Click the General tab. The operating system is displayed as follows:
    • For a 64-bit version operating system: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System.
    • For a 32-bit version operating system: Windows XP Professional Version <Year> appears under System.
If it is 64bit, pop it in :)
