Using Ebay to push traffic to your website?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with using ebay listings to push traffic through to your website.

We feel it could be a good way to push traffic through to your website for next to no money at all. Costs being a listing along with a final fee if sold - otherwords a few pounds for up to 30 day's of advertising.

To also keep within the rules, the listing will be for a product / virtual product so when sold, it will be delivered and relisted to go again.

Obviously would have to keep in within the laws of Ebay so just putting your website address in your 'About us' section and then adding the address within an image in the listing to push the traffic across to your website.

Any ideas or feedback of the gains achieved would be much appreciated.

Hi Pete,

Many thanks for sharing that - is that simply a auction / buy it now style listing with a template inside it advertising the products and pushing the viewers across to the website?

Is the company a fair size? Just to work out whether the 50% of customers is referring to hundred's or thousands.

Hi Ryan,

The company isn't very big - so we are talking hundreds rather than thousands.

He usually has just one advert on a bidding with buy it now (limited availability), then his brand and website are used to promote the product. Lots of people then buy direct from the website.

Hi Pete,

Okay, many thanks for the info - it seems comparing the cost of an ebay listing and the little time it would take to create, it is 100% worth a try. Costs may occur though if you were to get a template designed with images, info etc .. which would then be placed within the ebay listing. Would cost anywhere from £100 + for this design but would give the page a professional and almost 'trustworthy' image.

Anyone else care to share any experiences with this?

Would work but not as well as you might hope. eBay buyers are a strange bunch. They stay on eBay even if you offer the product cheaper on your site or direct over the phone. Someone prepared to pay over the odds is usually a bit odd themselves and hard to deal with. I'm guilty of it myself tbh.

Be careful with links. Although definitely try it to start with. If you get picked up on it it won't be down to eBay (they don't care or check). It'll be a competitor grassing you up. Which is fair enough.

    Reasons why people stay on ebay
    - Safety, people trust ebay will have leverage to resolve problems (and it does as sellers fear bad rankings and ebay punish low performance)
    - Loyalty, as in ebay got the buyer to the product they need at a price they like, so why be disloyal

    Regarding being grassed up, its not just competitors that will grass up listing rule breaches, including links or any encouragement to sell off ebay, it is anyone that plays by the rules, as the ones breaking the rules are costing the ones that play by the rules. (Good versus evil)

    From what people are saying, there adding their website address to their 'about us' section (which is within the rules and then adding the address within an image. So I would guess an image of the product with the address almost as a watermark.

    Just for my clarity, the web site address would just be on the product image?

    Thanks for the input.

    Some good points raised - it would be interesting to hear what results others have had from this form of advertising? Any other ways to keep it within the rules as much as possible but by also maximising the opportunity?

    We've sold on eBay for over 5 years and get very little traffic to the website from eBay. As llocaly said; many 'eBay customers' are a strange bunch and will either buy from their as they genuinely believe it is the bottom price, or for ease of use and the safety they have with buying from there.

    We've found the best way to use eBay (other than of course selling products) is to ask for their information to be used in our marketing strategy; You can quickly get a large mailing list from customers who have purchased off you in the last 30 days.

    Thanks for your feedback - this listings main aim would be to push the viewer onto the website, I'm sure your main aim of the listing is simply to sell the product? The text, images and display of the ebay listing would differ from yours with the main aim of pushing the viewer onto the website.

    Do you mean manually requesting the purchaser for their details?

    In regards to listing content etc there isn't much you can do without breaking their policies (links etc)

    When you get a sale you get the customers mailing address; as long as their happy with you sending them emails then add them to your mailing list.

    From what we can work out, the listing would be for an actual product (maybe a cheap product to increase sales and push it to the top of the the listings) - within the listing would be information on a certain product or service and aim to push the viewer from the ebay listing to their website. Placing a link within your 'About me' section is within the regulations. You could then place a website within an image - e.g - image of certain product with the website address to the bottom of that image.

    That's how we've interpreted it although it would be great if anyone can add input regarding this.
