Hi All,

Just a quick post to get your thoughts regarding the use of trade accreditation and how Limited companies obtain trade accreditation like Gas Safe, NICEIC, NFRC, HVAC, City & Guilds etc.

E.g. in a self-employed/sole trader scenario, a qualified plumber who is 'Gas Safe' is entitled to promote his business by advertising as being 'Gas Safe', but how does a Limited company apply for such trade Accreditation?

Say, for instance, I was to establish an electrical contracting company and employ qualified electricians, how exactly does my limited company obtain NICEIC status? Also, what if, after a few years of good trade, I want my electrical company to start diversifying and undertaking plumbing work so I employ plumbers... how does my company then obtain the Gas Safe accreditation? And does the same apply if I decide to use contractors rather than direct employees?

Many thanks

You would be best placed to look for this information on the relevant association websites... www.gassaferegister.co.uk www.nieceic.com etc

A business registration for GSR is similar to normal registration in that it is attributed to ONE engineer, so that any additional employees who will be working as gas engineers will need to be registered as individuals.

So for example if John Smith, a gas engineer sets up Smith Heating Ltd then he will register with GSR as a business and the registration number will be tied to him and his business, but if he employs another few engineers then they will each need to have their own GSR numbers to operate legally.

I can't comment on NIECEIC but I'm sure their website will explain.

Thanks for your reply... but what if John Smith wasn't a plumber himself but wanted to incorporate a plumbing company (smith heating ltd) and employee qualified plumbers? The company could have the gas safe accreditation because (at least) one employee is gas safe?

My instinct tells me that if smith heating ltd is, in effect, carrying one of the employees GSR registration, any errors that the company incurs could jeopodise that one employees GSR status or does that not apply?

Do you know if this is the same if using contractors rather than direct employees or are the rules totally different when using contractors?

Kind regards

Again you are asking in the wrong place. GSR are the people who are best placed to answer your question. Why not drop them an email or give them a call, I'm sure they would be more than happy to answer any questions you have.
