US StateSales taxes

My partner works for a business that sells online and has been told they have to pay US State Sale taxes, however the products are dispatched from the UK direct to various US states, they don't have a warehouse in the US, so assume they aren't liable.

I find it odd you don't have to pay various state sales taxes.
