I too eat, sleep and drink Joomla and I can say that your comment is not possible. You cannot put VM into Joomla back to front...it is a component of not instead of...so can be disabled ad hoc

Nor would you 'collapse the site' unless you messed about with the db or the files direct via ftp.

I think i worded it wrong as my Joomla guy has just spoke to me on another job, and i asked him to clarify and this is the reply.

The fact remains that there's nothing on that page other than the VM component......search engines verify this too.
The site isn't built back to front as such.....it's just that because she's put VM as the shop window on the front page rather than valid key content on for SEO she's now paying the penalty re SEO. Apart from that it's all in the root directory which is totally wrong on every level. The site needs to start again its to jumbled will be a can of worms..

I understand your comments and will remain objective in my reply.

I do not need to go to Afghanistan to know that IED's can kill me.

Nor do I need to go into a site to confirm what the role of VM is within Joomla.

All my comments were aiming to do was to shed a little light for you as to the role of the component in Joomla. It cannot stand alone, it cannot get mixed up...it is published and shown via a menu where the site owner chooses to publish, period.

As a qualified developer I was hoping to educate you, without patronising in the ways of Joomla for free (it is only a php program not a NASA space project) as you seemed a little mixed up regarding the role of VM.

As for wanting money? Nope, my diary is fully booked with Joomla and wordpress projects and as such I am not actively (nor do I) touting anywhere for business via forums so apologises if that is how you understood me taking part in an open forum.

This, in itself does not present a problem. If the component was to be published then you would amend the parameters to ensure effective meta content.

Within the product/info pages you would then apply the same on page SEO efforts you would on any other page and gain the same results. After all, the bots PARSE a page in the pubished order as shown via the W3C compliance examples or indeed the bots own alog.

Having VM in the root directory is NOT possible. As stated, it would not publish nor display if this was the case.

To use VM at any level would require it to be installed thus

>root >components>then published ext manager PERIOD!

If she has found a way to install and publish VM via the root I am sure the developers at Joomla.org would love to hear from here.

The components placement is NOT going to directly affect SEO, the components attributes will and do, namely pages and products.

Just to confirm, publishing the VM component as a stand alone page, index or otherwise can be effective and I am sure many stores already operate this way. It is how you POPULATE the VM com that makes the difference...

Haven't you already got first page natural listings on google for your main key word phrase: metal wall art (position 7). This is impressive since according to adwords there are a lot of searches for this, 74,000 exact match type searches (that figure to be taken with a pinch of salt), with a lot (285,000) of website pages competing in the UK for this term. So I certainly wouldn't say that it is a niche term in a non-competitive market.

Have you been monitoring your traffic recently? I see you have google analytics installed, perhaps you have been getting a lot of visitors, just not a lot of customers.

I cant see any major changes being made to your site between google's cache of your site on 16th Feb and your site now, but if you are making changes be careful not to do anything that will spoil the rankings you already have..

Thanks for the info awebapart, I know that's a reasonable spot and I dont want to seem ungrateful or anything for where I am already at, but I know that my site can perform better as I know there is so much wrong with it that it would be really silly of me not to try to improve and get that top spot.....after all that's what everyone aims for isn't it! When it comes to getting Jake's work seen then that's where we need to be, as first impressions last and I want Jake's work to be the first work seen, to set the standard of what metal wall art is all about, instead of all this imported rubbish that you can find all over the place. In my opinion he is a quality artist with quality designs and he deserves a quality spot.

Ref watching my traffic ......once upon a time when Kerrie wasn't a mum she had a brain (granted not an over large one but a brain all the same!) Then she had two small children, just after trying to start up her own business with her partner promoting his art and running a 5 acre small holding. During this time Kerrie's Brain got fed up and decided to leave town, leaving Kerrie without the capacity to retain any information with out getting totally confused!!!! I am reliably informed however that I am not the only woman in the world to suffer this problem after having children and I have been told that my brain will move back in, in the end once its got over the stress and the shock of it all!

Sorry I went off on one there.............What I was meaning to say was that I had google anyalitics once! I know that! but if you asked me where to find it now, or how to use it to its best advantage, I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about it and to go and find it and find out all about it, all over again, would mean learning it all over again and today I haven't got time to do that as I have hedges to lay the house to sort out shopping to do, children to pick up etc etc etc.

Now you have bought that up, I will have to factor that into my itinerary and look at that again and see what I can figure out from it and make sure I don't loose how to find it all again and thanks for reminding me it was there even though I don't know where there is!

There is a browser problem, although I do not think this is affecting google at least. If you visit the www home page with FireFox it is OK, if you do the same with IE7 you get redirected to artsapart.co.uk/vmchk.html with a cookie message saying your browser does not support cookies. This could be a Virtuemart cookie checking error. Google has indexed the www side of the website, but strangely bing.com has indexed the non www side, perhaps because of this error.

Thanks again for the info on this, I have been aware of this for some time but have filed it right a the back of my brain, as when I first became aware of it, I tried to get it sorted out, got myself in a confused mess and then tried to forget about it all again as I sadly lack the knowledge or the time to learn that knowledge to be able to put it right. My whole site is in such a pickle but I am now getting some help with it so hopefully I will get all these little problems ironed out at last!

I found my google account this evening and managed to get my password and user name correct and found it was much easier to get to than I last remembered, so I am glad you encouraged me in this direction! What I found though was a little sad .......my site has only had two reffered visits according to the stats!!! And that was about all the information I could find on there, so that explains why I have not been getting lots of customers through my site!

I wish it was for just a small time span like that but apparently when I hit the year tab to the top right of the stats screen, those are the figures that it spat back at me....I could also find the month tab and the week tab but they were far to depressing to look at so I opted for the one with the most lol

hmmmm well it seems that there is a problem there for sure then! I will have a look for that little no on the stats pages and see if I can find it.

Ref the hosting company I know what comapny hosts me now so I will make contact and see if I can get access to that data then........maybe I should have a go at re-installing the code too! The trouble is its not highlighting any problems to me in my dashboard thing, typically it tells me its all working fine!

I have been advised to do this before by another knowledgeable chap....I did try once adding links to my site (which I assume is the same thing?) but it all went horribly wrong and I havent dared go there again yet. Thanks for the advice Deano.
