Updating website

By using FrontPage I published a website few months ago. Now after deleting two pages of the website from the source I re-published/uploaded the website on the server. Unfortunately, the deleted pages are still visible in the website and are functional. I have tried a couple of times to upload the website to affect the changes but it is not working. Would appreciate if any fellow member could guide me.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi acf

I would suggest you get yourself a FTP program like Filezilla and simply delete the files manually.

Regards

Dotty

ps are you sure they have not been deleted but remain cached in your browser (try deleting your temporary internet files and then hitting refresh)

Generally, a site that uses the built in "FTP client" in Frontpage won't allow access to the site via "normal" FTP.

I touched Frontpage once in 1998 and never went near it again, so I'm afraid I won't be able to help with this one.

Hi acf,

The files are on your server and until you remove them they will continue to be visible. If you cannot connect to the server via FTP then maybe you could email your web host and ask them to delete them for you - they may do if they are feeling kind!

You can use cute FTP or Smart FTP - free versions are available I think. You will need 3 things to connect - a host name (which might look like a URL), a username and password. If you don't have them then your web host will definitely be able to send them to you.

Unfortunately nothing you do on your desktop computer will have any affect on the server - deleting the files from the source is the only way.

Good luck!

That's not true from my experience Gavin - certainly the way our hosting is setup is that ALL accounts (whether or not the customer uses frontpage, and frontpage extensions) can be easily accessed via FTP, however what will happen (when uploading a Frontpage site using ftp and not by publishing in frontpage) is that all the proprietory frontpage "extras" will break (things like their search etc)...

Like you - personally I wouldn't touch frontpage (for many many reasons - especially now Microsoft have ditched all support for it), but for now, there's plenty of people out there still building sites with it.

On my old hosting provider, they have the following statement in their help file:

If you install FrontPage extensions you will not be able to upload your files and manage your site using FTP.

This is all of the help files from my old hosting company on Frontpage - it may help?

To publish your site using Microsoft FrontPage you must first have FrontPage extensions installed on your account, see above. Click the 'Publish Web' option from the 'File' menu in your FrontPage software. Enter your full web site domain name when asked where you want to publish your site to and click 'Publish'. You will be asked for your account username and password, after which your site will be published to the server. Note that you can only publish your site to an active domain name using FrontPage, you cannot publish your site using FrontPage to the FTP server, to a temporary URL or to a domain name which is not yet fully transferred to our network.

Thanks for advice which I received from all of you. I think I need to contact the server administrator to get these files deleted from the server. The offline preview of the website does not show the deleted files but when viewed online, those deleted files/webpages are always there in the website.

Thanks once again.
