I don't think it is necessary to have a unique product or service, but I think it you always need to bring something different to encourage clients to use yours over others.

the item doesnt need to be unique but it is extremely important to have a unique selling point. It might be price or the method of buying, quality or anything differing. Otherwise you are up against a direct comparison and price becomes the only factor people can see and then it is a race to the bottom.

Totally new means paying for education which is highly expensive because you have to teach people that they need the idea. It is also very lucrative once you have the market. You need something to compare your product against if possible.

"Why swap from what i am used to" is the big question and lowering the price to change for the punters. For instance take 5 bladed razors, nice new better but you have to just about give away the stem bit (cheap christmas present is one of their marketing methods.) Once you have the handle it is a pain in the butt to switch back to a cheaper blade because the handles are not discounted. If someone requires chucking away good kit to move over you have to factor that in as well. so unique can cause problems.

Being unique doesn't necessarily mean being good, there is also nothing wrong with taking a tried and tested product/service and making it better or cheaper.

Of course we must be unique + good (+ probably make a good marketing) but i think unique idea with good marketing and customer service is much more easier become a profitable business.

Moneyman i thinking about small inovations no brand new invetions. This is the different (for me) innovation and invention, invention need a (like you said) big marketing to educate about new product but innovation is the same product with new value :).

PS: Sorry for my english.

It all depends on budget. If you have millions to throw into your first year of business, then copycat products and services would survive and thrive as long as you keep throwing money into marketing.

However, without a big budget, you need to find something to pull prospects your way, it doesn't necessarily need to be unique, but it's a good idea.

100% agree.

Unique doesn't always mean good, you have to also ensure there is a market for your product/service at the price you are charging.

Of course, i understand that, something unique must be on a good market and must be value to the client, i agree :).

Personally, I don't think "Branding" has a lot to do with purchases any more, my personal thoughts are that people go for the way that products are advertised nowadays.

In the Locksmith Trade we have to provide specific products that people associate with YALE or CHUBB - we don't sell those specific brands, we sell them an equivalent product that is either the same standard or better.

Take for instance the Yale BS Euro Cylinder - Anti-Snap, Anti-Drill, Anti-Screw, Anti-Bump and Anti-Pick protection. from £29.99 + VAT

We sell the Eurospec BS MPx6 Euro Cylinder - Anti-Snap, Anti-Drill, Anti-Twist, Anti-Bump, Anti-Pick and Anti-Plug Pull protection. for £19.99 + VAT (any size)

From my personal experience of both Cylinders I'd go with the Eurospec version every time, not just because of the cost but because I believe it's a better design and I'm getting more for my money.

Both Cylinders are virtually the same to the untrained eye, but for me the quality of the Eurospec Cylinder is 10x better.

Uniqueness is one quality that one may look into a product. Customers don't want that their products especially clothes to have the same design with other people. Unique services, on the other hand, are most considered because competition is all over the communities around the world. To avoid more competition, you just have to be unique to avoid competitors. So, being authentic is in this 2013.
