Are there any different search engines used in UK and/or EU or does Google own the world?

There are a few search engines authored in France...
Voila.fr , Exalead.com , Dir.com , DeepIndex.com , francite.com, but generally the big search engines have most sites covered.

I'm curious - why do you want to know? Are you trying to find something to use as an alternative or is it that you want to do some SEO for things?

Firstly, thank you for your help so far. Have been checking out all the suggestions.

In response to Simon, we have a service that is used by companies located in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

When UK and EU companies search, would they not use a se located in their own jurisdiction?

We are optimizing for google; it's tremendously tedious and takes months.

Google kw are horribly expensive, even for the most obscure searches. Even targeting only particular countries, google charges the same outrageous prices as if the audience was world-wide.

That's how come we are seeking better alternatives.

Am I odd then? All I do is use google.co.uk (rather than .com) and click for sites from the UK only if I want something that's specific to this country.

Try using a product like Web CEO for your seach engine submission, it list's lots of search engines in each country and submits to them for you. It's FREE as well which is always nice...

I have to admit it takes a while to learn it and I'm still starting out using it but it looks like it's one of the best out there. One useful feature is the Search for partners section, as having good links to your website will improve your page ranking...
