UK - Care Home

Hi

My partner Sarah would like to start a company, a care home in England. Is there anyone out there that owns a care home, or knows someone who does? Would she need a licence for this? Or certain qualifications?

And if anyone here has any parents in the UK in a care home, may i ask how much per week they pay to stay in a care home? Were trying to do sums etc.

Thankyou

Hi Gameover

Having done the books for a care home and having a partner that works for a home care company, I have one piece of advice.

Make sure that the carers that you employ want to be carers and not just taking advantage of what they consider to be an easy job.

Looking after the emotional and physical needs of the EMI person demands a certain strength of character, to be able to give that person dignity and confidence in their carer and surrounds is not an easy task and is made almost impossible by these "so called carers" who don't care what job it is as long as it's a job.

I would also not even consider anyone who doesn't want to work full time as more often than not they are just trying to cash in on the working tax/child tax credit schemes and again this is not the quality of staff that you need to "really" look after someone who is going to require the level of care that you will be offering.

You will also need to look at training your staff to at lest NVQ 2 Level in Care, with your senior carers going on to level 3.

You should check out with the local authorities what level of payment they offer for Socil services clients that they refer to you as this may not be the same level as you would wish to charge private clients.

Sorry for the rant, but care standards is a subject that is close to me and it makes my blood boil when EMI patients are neglected by companies out to make a fast buck.

I couldnt agree more with you.

Yes its a business venture, thats what business is, its all about money, where would business be without greed?

BUT, i do beleive in a good quality service, i would be employing a well tranied, nice, caring manager to employ people.

My partner has worked in care for 5 years, shes studying to be a nurse now, and shes also getting her NVQ 2 and NVQ 3, she would work at my home until were fully staffed.

I also beleive the residents should have lots of days out, and activities to go to, living in a care home is not about siting in a chair all day at all!

Good post BMS.
