Similar to what i asked in the facebook groups thread about creating each individual group for each tv show etc, Do you think i can do the exact same with a different twitter name only thing i would have to do i suppose is sign up with alot of accounts wouldn't i

Does anybody have any tips for twitter is there certain things you can sign upto over the web for the best tips on twitter

Is there anything free out there for twitter backgrounds or where you can create your own twitter background

I've recently started following a few business's because they retweeted some of my tweets related to them by doing trend searches. <edit-mod> Its a fickle business, but interacting with followers/everyone is the best way =)

I recently had a play on there as i found someone who needed my services :D

I might try and join in the "community" a little and see if there is anything to be gained.

But from a quick look at trends / searching for terms it seems really spammy.

twitter is a fad, best online business advice I ever read, don't follow fads.

If that's true, it's a pretty long-lived fad :) It's been going for years - I've been on it for three years and have seen it change a lot in that time. To begin with, it was mainly used by techie folks, then by their non-techie friends who just wanted a quick way to keep in touch with the world. Then businesses discovered the usefulness of Twitter as a marketing tool (it's a ready-made audience of people who actually *want* to hear what you've got to say) and then celebs started getting in on the act (for the same reason as marketers, no doubt :)) This of course attracted lots of people who wanted an opportunity to get a reply from their favourite celebs.

I don't believe that Twitter is a fad - the fact that it keeps on growing, keeps developing new features (a few new ones are on their way as we speak) says to me that it's not going anywhere, any time soon :)

Twitter *is* a great marketing tool, *if* you use it properly. The wrong way to use Twitter is to post nothing but links to your website or blog, and never interact with your followers or people you follow. That makes you look spammy, and won't do you any favours. But if you interact with people, show a bit of personality, link occasionally to interesting/useful things that aren't yours - it's a great way to promote your brand and find new customers :)

"don't get involved in fads" has to be amongst the worst advice ever imo

This is a fast moving market, your company has to be flexible enough to cash in on opportunities. A sale is defined as when preparedness meets opportunity. If you reduce opportunities, then you reduce potential sales.

To get the most out of twitter, buy Joel Comm's book on twitter marketing, follow the 30 day plan in the back and spend a few minutes a day keeping it up to date. Add people of local influence by finding them on twellowhood, but follow the advice in Joel's book.

I've been on Twitter for a couple of years now - and like Debbido have seen a number of changes in the way it's been used - and indeed in the way I use it myself. I created a blog post 'How I am using Twitter by a relatively new Twitterer - a couple of years back now - but the content is still highly relevant - and I've written a number of practical posts on social media planning and using twitter and facebook, linked in etc. We now manage a number of client accounts via Twitter - and it's working well for them. Is it bringing in direct sales? Yes - definitely, not in a swamped way - but it's building brand recognition, authority, traffic and sales. The key is to 'joining up' your social media activity - so that it is fully integrated with your offline marketing activity and your strategic direction.

I too use http://www.hootsuite.com a great resource for managing multiple twitter, facebook and linked in accounts - you can schedule communications, respond and importantly - track keywords so that you can watch for useful and relevant conversations. In my view this is the area that will evolve even further in the future - as this is where the real lead generation value sits.

When i first went on twitter, i really didnt like it, I didn't understand how to use it,

Now totally different perception

I use twitter to mainly speak to other letting agents etc

and use facebook to speak to my website users

I followed a lot of spam at first and they followed me back , I have now managed to get a good follow list by deleting anyone who is spam that follows me and quickly vetting every new follower or people i follow and using app's like http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/

Twitters good if you give it time and get used to it

One of the problems with social network sites is they sap your time. You can find yourself spending more time posting tweets and facebook posts, maintaining friends lists and groups than you spend in the real world making actual sales.

Someone recognised this and has set up a business called tweetsdebiz.com which could save time and effort. It does not cost much either

Whether Twitter is a fad really doesn't matter, the key is to go with fads, use them to your advantage, when it starts to become ineffective you will already be onto the next fad... and so it goes on
