Twitter and social networking

Medical Ian

Hi all

I started my business in July and things are going well. We have brought on a number of clients who frequently use our medical services.

I have just employed a Sales Manager who will be integral in generating new business and building our customer base and that will be on a cold-call/relationship building basis. What I want to explore is the use of social media in generating awareness.

I am a complete novice when it comes to LinkedIn, Facebook and twitter, and was wondering if someone would be up for meeting in Birmingham to explain how it works and how I can get my company followed and awareness raised about what we do. We have a twitter account, which I suppose is a start.

Thanks all, I look forward to hearing from you.

Social media can be an incredibly powerful tool. However, the success of social media for your business depends heavily on the industry it sits in.

For example, if you're a business in medicine, social media isn't going to perform as well as someone in say, e-commerce. Why? Because it doesn't 'trend'. It's not considered interesting to many people.

Social media works best in B2C environments. However, that doesn't mean that it doesn't work for B2B businesses either. It's worked for mine. I've generated relationships with many people using social media. Many which have ended up turning in to clients. Many are still using our services.

Just be careful of people promising the world using social media. I can see your business is in medicine. While it's not impossible to use social media to your benefit in your industry, it's not as easy or as lucrative as many other industries.

ALSO: One note I might add...
I recommend against getting a company to do the social media for you... I suggest you get the tools and facilities integrated, and focus on getting the company to teach you how to use social media for your own business.

No one knows as much about your business as you do, so why get someone else to update your social media channels?

Get a company to build, streamline and integrate the system. Get them to show you how to use it and how it works.

Anyway, based on experience of working with many social media clients, that's my honest advice. If you need a hand, or would like to discuss social media. Do give me a shout. As a bonus, we're based in Birmingham! Specifically Sutton Coldfield...

Hopefully, catch you soon.

Hi Ian

I realise this is an old post but I wondered if you've started using social media for your business and if you are finding it effective?

I've found there are a lot of people out there claiming to be social media experts who are simply jumping on the bandwagon and potentially giving business owners the wrong introduction into the world of social media. (I'm not saying that about anyone here - just my general observation).

A lot of my clients have previously said 'social media isn't for business' or 'social media didn't work for me'. Well usually this is because they've used it ineffectively or someone has done a bad job for them. Remember, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc are just tools, it's what you do with the tools that count. Simply having a Facebook page with information that you can already find on your website isn't a social media strategy!

Anyway, if you're still interested in finding out what social media could do for your business or if you're not satisfied with what you're currently doing I'm more than happy to give you some pointers over the phone or at my studio in Birmingham.

Regards
Andrew

Just wondered how your social media / internet marketing was coming on ?

You might find some of the free guides on the site eb2bleads.co.uk useful or drop me a line if I can offer any advice as its focused on the creation of leads, sales and loyalty from online marketing such as social media.

I agree with Andrew. There are many ways businesses can use new social platforms and channels. Many people think it's just a case of setting up profiles and see what happens. Saying that, to an extent, It doesn't worry me that ROI and actual sales are wooly areas with social media, its about building your brand, and a community.

'Social CRM' is a term I guarantee people will start to hear more and more. IMO Social CRM (Customer Relationship Management) is an extension of traditional CRM. The social business model gives the customer more control.

Social networks allow businesses to build communities, listen and engage in conversions whilst having the ability to innovate based on prospects' and customers' insight. Businesses can themselves provide industry-specific insight and support to prospects and customers, then start to build and strengthen relationships. We all buy from people we like and trust, social media can be a great way to really turn contacts into long term customers. These platforms give the customer new ways to communicate with you and can provide you with a new way of understanding your customer-base. The more you know about someone the easier it is to sell to them, social media allows businesses to get on a level with their customers and understand more about them, which can only be a good thing!
