bank balance ;)

Seriously though... customer segmentation (from my experience) is dependant on what you are looking to actually do with the data, and what you are selling/offerring in the first place... so music tastes would be an ideal for apple selling ipods, but no use to us selling web services.

Depends what you are selling?

Age and Addresses are good, as you can figure out house values and know roughly if they are working people who can afford luxuries. Not always 100% as everyone are different, but gives you a rough target group/area.

There's no target market in mind. Google matches ads with key-words on a site - no matter who actually visits that site. If you could convince site visitors to reveal 20 things about themselves to help with the ad-matching, what would they be? Obviously, your marketing needs will be different from the needs of others, but I was hoping for a rather generic list: age, gender, home location, income range, education level, hobbies, ... this type of thing.

age, location, annual income, car driven, holidays taken, no. of children if any, homeowner, computer user, newspaper read, supermarket used....etc. the list is not exhaustive and the top 20 would depend purely upon the product/service you are trying to sell. So for us it would start with car driven, annual income etc. If you are planning print advertising then its essential to find out what your target market read and so on...

What do they buy at the moment? (in areas related to your service)
Why do they buy that?
Why would they buy your serive?
How do they buy?
Do they have a budget?
How is the budget determined?

Too many companies try and focus on the easier information to find out about customers and prospects. What you really need to know is their buying habits. You can then start to match these with your offerings. The supermarkets are doing this well now with regards to their loyalty cards - you will get discounts against the things that interest you.
