Hi,
I'm on the look out for other maths/science tutors that would be interested in working collaboratively on resources and with help with online marking. Is there anyone out there who can help, suggest where I can find tutors or is a tutor themselves? I am a maths/science tutor myself and have been previously a maths school teacher.

You had me until you mentioned marking!

Full time maths teacher, who has done a bit of tutoring in the past, and pondering options as I move closer towards semi-retirement. Hate marking!

There is a big maths teacher & tutor community on twitter, that may be a good place to build contacts.

Let me explain, I'm in the process of making a piece of software that will do marking!

How much are you paying?

I tutored for years after leaving teaching - one of the reasons for leaving was all the marking!

If you want to send me details I’ll take a look.

Hi,

I'm looking for others to collaborate with to work on a project to pool both £ and resources, so I'm not paying, it is something which I expect to generate money, but first I want to find out if others would be interested to get enough people on board. The thing itself would generate more money per pupil - and therefore per hour include doing the marking.

Love to share details (I have a wireframe) on Zoom/Googlemeet, if this sounds near something that interests you.

Well let's hope it is better than what is out there.

I have a son who now is a health economist (following on from double maths alevels and a maths degree from Warwick) and a daughter just taking double maths, physics & CompSci ALevels. Without fail the biggest issue they have had is with being told to do exercises/past papers online and the systems/websites being too inflexible to deal with whatever method they decide to use or just plain wrong.
Just earlier I could hear her swearing at Seneca

Yes, I am creating pedagogically layered exercises specific to GCSE AQA and Edexcel. There is a very real problem with differing methods that a piece of software simply cannot handle. It is less of a problem with the GCSE and a huge one with any level above that.

You have highlighted on of the two reasons why I would not bother to do anything above GCSE.

And, indeed a very annoying problem which is why I am aiming at user-generated content but that itself requires good programmers and good moderators.

If you get far enough to be raising capital, remember you can’t offer it to the public normally (eg, here or on Twitter) but you can if the biz takes the form of a registered coop. Sounds like that model may suit you.
Thank you for that very helpful info, I have a finance lawyer on board giving advice which has been very helpful.

I'm looking out for other tutors and teachers who might find the product useful. Form a team of people that can use it themselves then move forward from that.

I teach both GCSE and A level maths. I can mark GCSE level work in “moments” - for most class work, home work and tests “tick and flick” is good enough. In general (but not totally, I agree) a correct answer will merit full marks. If not the correct answer, a quick scan will show whether any method marks are available.

I love teaching A level, but marking it is a whole different beast: the method is as important as the outcome - a correct answer will rarely merit full (or any) marks if you can’t see how the student has arrived at the answer. A mark scheme will typically contain several different methods, all of which can earn marks.

Since Covid, and TAGs(teacher assessed grades) when we had to mark student exams for A levels and GCSES, my marking has become much more forensic , a colleague I work with is a senior examiner for one of the exam boards, and they have taught me a huge amount.

I still love teaching, still hate marking!

I presume you are aware of Sparx maths which has the KS3/ GCSE “self-marking work” pretty much sewn up (in maths, anyway)?

The software I propose is not for h/w (as Sparx/Century, Tech etc. is used for) it is for use during a tutoring lesson and is designed for ease of use (think of the old Nokia vs other phones), is much more user friendly and pedagogically spiralled, yes it can be used in the way that Sparx is used. Most of my students loath Sparx and Sparx does not enable the student to write GCSE answers in the way that you need to for the exams. The primary use is for a more natural way for pupils to directly answer exam Qs and ease of use to create lesson plans for specifically tutors (and teachers, but more on that another time).
Incidentally, I do not bother to do anything above GCSE either.

The struggle you will have is getting people to fund your business idea. Do you have a MVP you can show teachers and tutors?
