My membership hasn't cost a penny yet! They've not sorted out their invoicing system so they have approved me and said they'll sort the £50 fee out 'sometime' 
It's a basic disclosure check you apply for via a company called Disclosure Scotland' Costs £20 and only takes a week or so to get your certificate.
Just shows your not a nut job (actually just goes to show you've never been caught so a clear CRB shows that you are either good at being good or good at being bad)
Also included is a financial check to make sure you've not got a long list of CCJ's / bankrupt businesses etc. and they pick several of your past customers at random to write to for testimonials.
If the scheme only gets you one extra job a year it's more than paid for itself.

It's a requirement for joining the scheme but not a requirement for all tradespeople.
