Transferring a Domain?

Hi guys,

I'm having problems. Probably stupid ones, but nonetheless problems.

I've bought a domain (namesco) and bought hosting from Go Daddy.
I want to redirect the domain to my hosting at Go Daddy. I understand I can't transfer the domain fully til after 60 days, but I'd like to redirect it, or at least point it in that direction.

It seems overly complex, going into a lot of detail about DNS. Which I haven't a clue about. Anyone got any advice on making this process a tad simpler?

It should be as easy as going to go daddy taking not of the nameservers they want you to use

going to namesco and finding somewhere to change the nameservers, changing the nameservers and waiting for some time for them to propogate around the internet

You have 2 options.

2) E-Mail support at namesco and ask someone to do it for you or at least instruct you on how to do it.

Bear in mind that any changes could take 48 hours to propagate across the internet...

Not too much I can add to this because everyone is spot on. I believe that the hasell of transferring a domain isn't really worth it so it's best to keep it with your current registrar and point it to Godaddy using their name servers.

OK, I attempted to point it to the nameservers at GoDaddy, but now the site is saying;
Firefox could not find www.domain.net


With some browsers saying DNS problems or not registered or summit. I guess I better contact GoDaddy support!

How along ago did you make the change? As warned earlier, it may take 48 hours for the change to propagate globally...

It can take 24-48 hours for the DNS to propagate round the world's nameservers, so no point calling support until tomorrow pm at the earliest.

if you changed the nameservers then no, as it's now pointing at the new server. You will just need to wait for it to fully propogate.

In essence it should, but because DNS is a distributed database you can get all sorts of combinations when updating your records, especially nameservers.

You should also check whether your server at GoDaddy is set to serve requests for the new domain you've pointed to it. I don't suppose you're on a dedicated server from GoDaddy so apart from changing the nameservers you also have to instruct the server to accept requests for the newly added domain. Unfortunately I've never used GoDaddy hosting so I can't help you with how to do that. It's usually something like parked or addon domains, but it's only a guess.

Do you mind me asking what made you choose GoDaddy for web hosting? Was it price, hosting features, because they're based in the USA or something else?

OK, it's been over 48hours, I've contacted both companies for support. GoDaddy support confirmed their Nameservers, which I have already used. It's still just saying;

Network Error (dns_unresolved_hostname)
Your requested host "www.domain.net" could not be resolved by DNS.

That would suggest there is a configuration error somewhere

you have changed the nameservers you will also need to add the domain to the godaddy control panel which if you haven't done may be what's causing you the problem your experiencing

Here's the options I'm getting at my domain registrar's DNS panel.
I think this is where I'm going wrong as I have GoDaddys nameservers.

What exactly do I put in ALL these boxes? lol. I'm not concerned about mail exchange or anything like that.

I added my domain name to the domain name section.

Now the A, CNAME, AA, etc, section I'm a bit confused.

Do I add my Godaddy nameservers to the Result part? and make sure the drop down box in the middle says NS (nameserver I assume?) Do I need to alter anything else? Like cname's, etc.

Sorry if I'm being naive, first time doing this side of things, not been able to find anything helpful online searching for help (and the domain support has been non-existent.)

no, what you need to do in the names control panel on the left where you are DNS and transfer options > Change nameservers (put Godaddy's nameservers in that menu)



The option you are using is when you want to add records for a new nameserver (which is what your showing in the picture above) i.e you are running your own nameserver and want to add an easy name to remember e.g domain.com may have ns1.domain.com which points to an ip on a server you own.

Which is not what you want to do you want to specify the authorative nameservers for your domain (i.e where the configuration information should be retrieved from)

Once you find out your primary and secondary name servers from Go Daddy, simply pace it in the subsequent field for name servers at your domain name registrar
